But first run on the road didn't go as planned low revs up to 1/2 throttle it's brilliant but after that it's a spluttery mess so now it's time to get the jetting / needle ect set right

If it's running hotter then it is because the fueling is off. The 170 runs a Nikasil plated barrel which will dissipate the heat better than a steel liner.

Double check the fueling and if that's fine then lower the spark plug grade.

In this weather the engine should run spot on. It really would only be an issue in peak summer.
