Oil Leak Tachometer Cable on Yamaha DT 125 R (1991)
-
Hi everyone,
I noticed that oil is leaking from the top where the Tachometer cable connects to the gearbox.
The cable seems to be completely submerged in oil. Is this normal?
Is there a breather pipe that might be not working properly?
Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,
Well the gearbox should have 750mls of oil inside of it. It could be that your waterpump seal has failed and it's leaking coolant into the gearbox which is causing oil to overflow.
Check your radiator for a creamy mixture.
Otherwise maybe the O-Ring that separates the tachometer from the outside has gone bad.

@eric74 Check the tacho drive O-ring like @Calum said, there should also be an oil seal that sits between the tacho drive and the end of the cable (i.e on top of the thread). These are about £2 from Fowlers.
The gearbox breather is on top of the crankcases not very far from the tacho drive, it's a white plastic stub/elbow with a clear tube attached and it's well worth checking this. Take off the gearbox oil filler cap and see if you can blow through the tube, if not Yambits sell a replacement which fits well and you can change it in situ if you're careful:

First of all thank for the quick help.
I replaced the o ring like @Calum mentioned. Still leaking. Also checked for the crankcase breather but couldn't find the plastic stub.

Thank you guys

@eric74 Fair play for getting on and replacing the tacho drive O-ring. Looking at your pics I'd say the oil is definitely coming from where the cable joins the tacho drive so I'd order the oil seal for this (item 7):

Looking at the 4th image you posted up, the plastic breather stub should be right behind the tacho drive about where the old O-ring you mentioned is so it looks like your breather is missing (items 14 and 15):

Not sure whether oil would be visibly leaking out of here if it simply wasn't fitted (you never see any oil in the clear tube IIRC) so it may be that someone had the bright idea of plugging the hole with silicone sealant or something similar. Have a poke around here but be careful, if that's what's been done it would be too easy to end up with it disappearing into the crankcase, but if you're patient with the needle nose pliers/tweezers etc. you can remove a wodge of sealant like that from the outside.
