Aftermarket exhaust on stock engine

I am looking at a Athena front pipe exhaust, but wondering if it does anything for me with the rest of the engine stock? And would I need to combine it with a new muffler to get anything?
My org front pipe has some damage from being laid down by previous owners, so if there is no downside I could make it look nice at the same time with a new pipe.
If, however, it performs worse than stock if I don't also combine it with bigger carbs, porting or big bore then I need to think about it.DTR 125 R -89

Definitely do your research on what pipe you go for.
I can't speak for Athena's pipe specifically, but the DEP pipe made a huge difference to my DTRE stock engine. The weight difference alone is impressive.
But yes, a stock pipe can make a difference. The thing is, with the later RE engines, they had a huge honeycombe catalyst system in the expansion chamber. The earlier models didn't have this restriction. Assuming of course it is the correct pipe for the year.

@tbthegr81 change it mate it's not going to do any harm. Obviously allow it to breathe a bit better with a performance exhaust. Next step maybe go up one on the main jet and a performance air filter but not necessary. The 89 model has a restriction in the exhaust in the form of a small washer/collar in the header fixed with 2 spot welds though after all these years and I presume many owners it's probably been removed by now. I highly recommend the dep exhaust. You need to be doing some serious tuning/porting work to justify a bigger carb.
