Vin Numbers (frame & engine)
-
From 1995 yamaha upgraded their alphabet to a more complex font and also the way they marked the VINs, what about engine markings where they dotted like Ducati for example or regular CNC/ laser etched? I heard there are DTRs with dotted engine numbers but i’ve Seen only regular markings
-
@Hybrid_Theory01 my 1999 is not dotted just regular.
-
Of what I’ve seen from 80’s 90’ to 00’ Yes they have changed the engine casing numbers in line to match the frame numbers. In size and font. Not that I would ever advocate such an illegal and treacherous action but I have seen where the engine casings were blasted and polished and painted to such a degree that the numbers (all original by the way) were put on using a rub on letraset. Then clear lacquer coated coz the paint filled the original numbers.

@Hybrid_Theory01 yes. 1999 4BL model.
-
@Hybrid_Theory01 around 1996 Yamaha moved production of engines and frames to separate factories, that's why they stopped matching the numbers so maybe there's a connection to the font changing.
-
@markus-w font changed in order to increase the difficulty of faking the alphabet and also at this moment the VINs were no longer written with "punches", my 1999 DE03 has the same number for the engine and for the frame (DE means it was made en egypt) this model is very common in germany.
-
@markus-w I heard a theory today that the way the numbers are written (laser etched, CNC engraved or dotted might be because of different factories (probably different on different counties) saw a picture of a Japanese made 4BL and the engine numbers were dotted
-
@Hybrid_Theory01 there could well be some truth in that because Yamaha stopped matching engine/frame numbers on later models and I read that it happened in around 1996 when production of engines and frames were moved to separate factories.
