91 DTR theft claim in 2003 !

Got the chance of a 91 J reg DTR in boxes mostly all there from what I can see, scrap plastics etc. Engine case smashed were the chain has snapped and wrapped around the front sprocket so needs a crankcase " would no longer be matching numbers " I wouldn't mind it for a resto project its not stolen but has had insurance theft claim 14 years ago on a vehicle check ! Would you still restore this bike does it matter after all these years and not matching numbers ? The matching numbers thing doesnt bother me to much though.

Well, I've imported a frame from Germany for a bike I'm building.
Got all the papers, the TÚV etc. The bike could have been scrapped for all I know as I can't read Germany.
I couldn't give a monkeys personally.
It's always always always, going to reflect the value. That's it. My bike was stolen, although never reported. And although you would never know now, had I made an insurance claim, it would affect the value.
Consequently I've butchered it so it's worthless anyway. But the point stands.

Well yes, if I was buying from Mr Chavey Blogs from Scumville.
If you could guarantee it's legitimacy, nah I wouldn't be phased in the slightest.
You can tell the DVLA the engines swapped so at least it matches the log book.
But I wouldn't buy it to restore as it will never fetch high value. Maybe if you exported it to Japan where the history is lost.

@scrimsmustang It all depends if your planning on keeping it for a while or just to sell on? Remember if it's got a tarnished history and you choose to sell her on, as people know you and your restoring skills, that checkered past may reflect on your reputation too ???

I would take it on, so many bikes that have survived have some sort of chequered past, my red bike has different frame and engine numbers, all registered with dvla in 1991, and the red bodywork is not original either. If you rebuild to your usual standard and quality would a historic theft claim affect resale? I don't think so, it's an old bike with a history, that's all. On the other hand if I went to look at a bike and felt uncomfortable with the seller or story I would make damn sure it was an honest story. Wish I could find a bike in boxes near me, plan to do one more after the 89 (famous last words!) Scarcity of bikes from that era is only going to get worse and at least you are bringing another one back in to circulation, plus if you get satisfaction from it who cares? 89 frame going to powder coaters today so a week or so and will begin rebuilding, don't do it for the money as there isn't any sort of return to take in to account the time and effort not just building but sourcing the right parts. I enjoy doing it, simple as that, have even roped my 7 yr old grandson in on the process, mind you he's dead keen to bash anything going but at least learning what tools are for. Go for it Scrim

Exactly, im having it your dead right, yes I probably will sell it when ive finished it after putting tons of time into for nothing so to speak as you say. But hey its not stolen on HPI thats the main thing anyway its original Purple looking at the frame and Purple on HPI but has a mixture of od plastics. Reg J224GMK been off the road nearly 15 years. The claim aint even categorized as a cat d etc its that old just says theft claim recovered and I would be quite happy to give whoever I sold it to a copy of the HPI. Probably take a while anyway.

@oldman By the time ive bought clocks wiring switches etc it wont be that cheap, at the moment its a POS in boxes. Ive slung most of it in the skip all the old plastics rusted tank etc, left with frame forks yokes wheels rear shock swinging arm airbox coil cdi and a broken engine. Wouldnt even make an old field bike at the moment lol.
