Exol oils?
-
Anyone had any experience with them? They’re selling Exol synthetic 2 stroke oil on fleabay for £25 for 5L. That’s a fiver a litre compared to £12 a L for the cheapest Comp 2 (gone up £10 in last month) or Castrol I could find. They meet the same standards as well...
I understand brand loyalty and quality but the prices are getting stupid if it’s the same product...

@SpookDog I guess I ride so infrequently that buying the top stuff isn't so much of an issue...
But you're doing crazy mileage by the sounds of it. I'm sure it'll be fine, although I've never heard of it. I guess it boils down to, is it cheaper to rebuild the top end every X amount of miles, assuming
X < Y
where Y is using top branded oils. Or just pay the extra for quality oil, again assuming there is an actual difference. -
@SpookDog I used Exol Optima in my '98 DTRe for over a year and it ran sweet as, it meets JASO FD (the Japanese auto industry standard for racing two-stroke oil) the same as Silkolene Comp2 Plus, Motorex Cross Power 2T etc. In fact I've even heard of Enduro guys using it in the modern TPI/autolube KTMs with no issues

@SpookDog I always use Castrol or silkoline now but.... I bought my first dt125r in around 1997, an 88 black and red with a 'blown engine' as the seller told me, for £200. Took it apart to find a snapped ring and a roughly 2mm scrape down the inside of the bore. As a skint 20 year old I just replaced the piston and rings, even keeping the same small end bearing, pinned the powervalve open and ran it for the next 3 years flat out on the cheapest oil I could find in the petrol station. Sold it about 15k miles later for £550 perfectly working. Which leads me to the question does it really matter?

I remember reading an article in superbike magazine about oils in the uk some years back and basically they said most of the oils sold in the uk are manufactured and refined in the same place, by the same company that owns or trades under the Fuchs Silkoline banner. I know not all oils are the same and it’s down to cost and personal choice. But I still love the smell of Castrol R and Shell advance Karting oil comes a close second.
