KTM EXC LED Headlight on Yamaha DTX – Anyone Done This Swap?
-
Hi everyone,
I bought a KTM EXC 2017 LED headlight and I’m planning to install it on my Yamaha DTX.
The headlight is currently with the shipping carrier. Is there anything I should know or check before installing it?
I’m looking for anyone with experience doing this conversion.
Any tips or photos would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Oh okay...wow, errmm the KTM one is quite ugly to be fair.
I was thinking you were showing a picture of your bike with it already fitted and was thinking! Yeah that looks sweet.
Your bike looks really tidy to be fair. The DTX/RE headlight is a lot better than the DTR headlight, is there something you're not getting out of the current headlight. Not only does your bike look sweet, but the light should be decent out of it.
I'm sure the KTM LED headlight will be even better though.

Thanks!
I’ve had this bike since I was 16, and as you can imagine, I didn’t always take the best care of it back then. Since I need to replace the headlight anyway, I thought it would be a good opportunity to modernise it a bit.For comparison, headlight. I’ve already had custom graphics printed for the new one so it matches the rest of the bike.

Oh that's really cool!
Well it looks well loved for, it's an appreciating classic that's for sure.
I don't know of anyone who's done that conversion. The common one from back in the day were the Polysport conversions, but they're more enduro so not designed for peak brightness

In the end, I decided not to install this headlight, ended up selling it.
Instead, I restored the original one and ordered a stronger LED bulb, which solved the problem perfectly. This way I can keep the bike’s original look, which I personally prefer.
Here’s a photo of how the bike looks at the moment. 👌

Also, some LED bulbs fitted in lights not designed for them can disrupt the beam pattern and cause problems with the annual MOT test we have for roadworthyness in the UK, not sure where you're based but most countries in the world have something like this.
On the DTR one of the best modifications is to install a 100/80W halogen bulb which is a lot brighter than stock but doesn't cause an issue with the MOT test. I'm not too familiar with the DTX/RE headlight, @calum does it still require a P45T bulb like the DTR ort is it another fitting like H4 etc.? And do they have AC lighting like the DTR so they can still run a more powerful bulb without flattening the battery?

I live in the Azores, Portugal, and we don’t have the equivalent of the annual MOT test anymore,(only cars have it, bikes dont thankfully).
For my DTX, it uses an H4 fitting. I’ll test it when it gets delivered and give some feedback. Anyway, if it flickers, I’ll buy one like you suggested.
