oil fouled spark plug
-
hello all,
im completely new to motorbikes and have just brought my first being a DT125R 2001 French import with 5000 miles on the clock. have been taking it to bits and putting it back together to get an understanding of them as im pretty technically minded. However i did notice the spark plug was pretty oil fouled. im a bit of a perfectionist and want it running perfectly befre i start with anything else, at the moment its completely standard with no mods. where would you start with finding the route of the problem on this?
thanks in advance

Hello and welcome.
The DTR is a two cycle engine.
By this it means it will burn oil as part of the combustion process.
Using the right plug, the right oil and the right fuel will really help with this.
So make sure you are using autolube appropriate oils along with a decent fuel. A bit of an oily plug is nothing to worry about. It's well known two strokes foul plugs as part of their nature. But the road going DTR shouldn't do that.
So unless you're at the point where plugs are failing, it's not something to worry about as it's just part of their nature.

@Calum cheers calum, fuel and oil is as it should be and ive just orderd a new spark plug so will see how it goes. i only looked at it as it was running a bit smokey. i dont know if its something to do with it hardly being used but hopefully ill get a chance when this lockdown is over!
cheers

@DTlee as @Calum explained the 2 stroke engine in mixes 2 stroke oil with the petrol so it's expected that it will smoke a bit, if you feel it's smoking a little too much have you used a cheap 2 stroke oil because there is available with some of the better quality oils 'low smoke oil'. Hope this is of some help to you.
