Gear cluster circlips; is there a correct orientation?

    Hi guys,

    As title, I'm replacing all the circlips and thrust washers on my '93 4BL gearbox input/output shafts and it occurred to me, does it matter which way round the circlips fit in the grooves?

    Ordinarily circlips of this type should be oriented so the sharp edge faces in the direction of thrust so as to really bite into the grooves when under pressure instead of jumping out (they have a sharp edge and a rounded edge due to being punched out of a steel sheet during manufacture).

    Only trouble is most of them have a gear on either side so if anyone has done this job before it would be good to hear which way round you fitted them and why (and if your gearbox turned out to be reliable!).

    The Haynes manual has a detailed description of stripping and reassembling the gear cluster but doesn't mention this and the Yamaha repair manual doesn't mention it!

      @HOTSHOT-III Hhhmm, I've never given this much thought. I've got several Aprilia RS 125 gearboxes to build and I've bought all new bearings and circlips for that...

        @Calum If I had to make a choice I'd orient the sharp edge of the circlips away from the gears which slide on the shafts so they can better withstand the loads of the gears changing position as you shift. Saying that the selector forks locating in the drum grooves should prevent them moving too far to place a huge load on the circlips when you shift in any case.

        Perhaps that's why orientation direction isn't specified; maybe the real question is how hard do the circlips actually work?

          @HOTSHOT-III The circlips on the RS are most peculiar. The are about £5 each.

            Just dress the curclips with some emery, wet’n’dry or a Dremmel so there is no sharp edge 😜

            PS or just use the back edge of a pair of scissors and run that round the sharp edge, anything that is made of good hard metal...

            I don’t think the edge even protrudes tho’ So it shouldn’t wear anything at all...

            I cheated out and reused the same clips when I stripped, cleaned and rebuilt my box. No issues with it. I would replace them if I could find same quality parts. No fleabay cr@p!!
