Dtx swingarmbolt stuck
-
Hey, so I went to take my engine out today. Everything went smoothly until I got to the swingarm bolt. I got the nut loose and gave it a couple of knocks. It moved enough so I cannot longer se the threads. The end of the bolt is flush with the frame.
Now it's just stuck. I've beaten it with a hammer and tried to warm it up with a torch. I've used wd40 and turning it while hammering.
I've hade the bike on it'd side and everything, I can't even get it to go back in its just seized stuck. I can move the swingarm a bit but the bolt stays stuck.
Help. -
Hi there,
Yeah this is quite common these bikes, can be a right nightmare to get loose sadly.
I don't think there is any type of magic, you just have to be patient and keep working it.
You need to ensure that you protect the threads on the swinging arm, so only hit it with the nut threaded on and use a copper mallet.
As you've highlighted, using heat and penetrating fluids here will help.
Try and eliminate the weight off the swinging arm to reduce frictional resistance. So jack the bike up from the center, take the rear wheel off. It's likely that the swinging arm bearings have collapsed and have seized onto the axle.
The next problem you'll encounter (by the sounds of things) is the suspension knuckle will be seized solid also.
The problem being these items are just so exposed to the elements they take the brunt of the dirt/grit.

@Calum I used an angle grinder and cut the bolt off between the engine and the swingarm. All the other bolts in the linkage and suspension was really easy to get off.
