Ha! I was just going to ask you if it was the piston or the LE bearing!…
File each side of the piston, the bearing must drop and have a little play.
I believe 0,5mm or 0,75mm of each side will do,measure your bearing because they are not all the same.

    @MadGyver
    Why thank you Sir!…

I did get round to doing some things today, once I stopped feeling sorry for myself:

    alt text

Lapped it smooth and ‘all over’ even as I could with what I have to hand…

    alt text

I always hate putting on a top end with the engine in-frame, but what can you do?
March or die! Can’t give up either way…

I had to remove the side cover and rotor so I could remove the stator, all so I could replace and tighten the coolant pipe-mount/engine-bolt! I did manage to torque up the stator nut this time because I could lock the crank via the little/small end…

    🤞

I forgot to ask: Does the Athena kit give the kickstart a more ‘compression’ feel than the standard? I used to be able to turn it over by hand on the kickstart…

          Yeah, I did wonder…

I’m going to leave it overnight for the leak-down test, before I start throwing it back together again. It’s dry so far…

Hopefully tomorrow will be the day! This 2 weeks has been the longest I’ve been without a ride since I got it on the road, I think!…

Yes it does. The first time I tried to start the engine it kicked back like a 4T and did little damage to my ankle. I had tha face "what the fux it's my XT600 all over again".
After the run in km's never happened.

Your spark plug wire must go from the other side,if you follow Yamaha schematics.

I need my tools and a pile of junk.....

The high tension lead? Interesting. I guess all my loom and wiring is bass ackwards! 😜 …

I had a 400 single that you had to find the sweet spot on, or it’d try and break your ankle! It had a decompression valve/lever that I could never get on with. You got to love 4/ singles. It’s like riding a 2 wheel tractor 🙂 …

Looking good spook! Have to let us know what the 170 kit is like and jetting wise. I’ve got to Abit of time to order mine be good to see how it goes with the TM32mm carb, are you running stock oil pump? I have the newer oil pump setup so can adjust it more be good to see if anyone has a guide on how much it needs adjusting by

I’m going to be running the standard pump to match the standard 28mm carb…

                ——————-

I think you need to work out the cm2 of the 28mm carb. Then the cm2 of 32mm. Figure out the % increase of the two. Then increase oil at WOT by the same %…

Or does that sound like BS?…

Went for a test ride, it was OK but getting misfires/knocking at certain lower revs. That and it was taking a bit of effort to tick over cold…
First thought was check the plug. It looks sweet. Looked to the right at the carb thinking it might be an air leak and remembered I’d changed the rubber inlet manifold. I forgot to blank off the 2T oil pipe inlet! What a twat?!….
                        🫤

Gonna test it tomorrow with the oil pipe blanked off!…

Oh, that's a shame. Hopefully all sorted now.

Took me a little while to get the jetting right on my 170 kit, but now it's done it's lovely.

Only been to the shop and back so I never properly warmed up. It felt really juddery at low revs, which I put down to the chain being as slack as a wizards sleeve (since corrected!). I’ve yet to take it for a proper test cause I’m all flued up and feel like shit!…

One thing I’ve meant to ask is about the exhaust tone/note. Not at the tailpipe but deep in the expansion chamber. It sounds really different from before. Anyone gone from standard 3mb to Athena and noticed a similar thing, or not? Any info appreciated 👍 …

I have a DEP modified to match the tuning, they tell me that it sounds like a factory 50cc moped not a tuned 170cc, that's until the power band then it screams like a TZ125. When was bought bone stock and abused sounded more serious I could say.

                                @MadGyver

Ive ridden it for 31 miles and it still feels very lumpy with compression when I kick it over. Nothing like when I put a freshly rebored 3mb and piston on it. I could turn it over with my hand then (after riding!).
I might be over worrying but I’m wondering if I could do with a thicker base gasket. The standard one is at least 1mm thick I believe?…

Is the powervalve all setup working correctly. I haven't got a video of my 170, but it's properly sweet.

Shouldn't be juddering, how slack was the chain!

Hey bud! Haven’t taken it over 5K so PV isn’t an issue. Chain was very slack, it must’ve bedded in during the 30mile shakedown ride a lot more than I thought possible! I’ve adjusted it up so it has just over 25mm play. I’m waiting till tomorrow to ride it cause I’ve had a few beers…

I’m probably worrying too much. I almost expect something to go wrong…

I’m waiting till tomorrow to ride it cause I’ve had a few beers…

I’m probably worrying too much. I almost expect something to go wrong…

Chain adjustment has gotten rid of the shuddering, just done 3 miles after warming up and it is riding sweet. Only niggle is at certain low revs when I’m just maintaining speed it sounds almost like there are a few tiny ball bearings in the expansion chamber. I’m guessing it’s a bit of a mixture adjustment in the pilot jet/valve cutaway range. Going to try and richen the airscrew and see what happens…
Tick over is very stable so I don’t think it’s a small air leak…

All in all it’s good. Pulls like a fuxin freight train @ low revs. Totally different animal! 🙂 …

I’m thinking of getting some bits of Urban Camouflage (grey, white & black) vinyl made up. Also a different colour seat!…
