Yamaha DT 125 RE carburetor swap.
-
Hey, I got a DT RE from 2008 and I wanted to ask (Since its difficult to find any information) what should I do if I change the stock carburetor, a Mikuni 28, to a OKO 32. Should i also re-ajust the oil pump? In my opinion it would be the best thing to do, but I dont really want to mess anything up. Any advice on this?
Thanks.

Hi @Nerin_BMX ,
Oh just Google'd that carb, I wouldn't touch that with a barge pole I'm afraid. Looks like a cheap Chinesium part.
Getting the fueling right is absolutely critical to your engine, you do not want to be scrimping here.
If you're after a decent carb in the 32mm range then Mikuni/Dellorto have some great options here. The Dellorto VHSA is a 32mm flat slide carb that was found on the TZR 125 RR Belgarda (It's the setup I run) and I either run premix at 2% or pump at factory settings.
The nice thing about the VHSA, or rather the TZR 125RR Belgarda, is that the bottom end is near identical to the DT125RE, so it's a great place to start when you come to jetting.
Out of interest, why are you looking at swapping the carb? What's the matter with the Mikuni? Bigger is not always better, as demonstrated in Graham Bell's excelled
Two Stroke Performance Tuning
. I've always maintained that if you're just starting out on the DTR and only have money for one item, make it the CDI. Grab yourself a Zeeltronic ignition system and you'll gain a lovely bump in midrange and top end. This is followed by a DEP pipe. Those two items alone made the biggest difference. After that it was all very...meh.Can't go wrong with: Zeeltronic, DEP Pipe & Carbon reeds and then leave the rest as is. As I've aged, I've also come to appreciate the Athena 170 kit. Just gives the DT a bit more welly to boot my fat arse about. Didn't feel necessary when I was 17...all those years ago.

Hey
Thanks for the info about the mikuni or dellorto, ill try looking up for those. Changing the carburetor seemed the most affordable modification to do. I dont have much money and I just would want a little change, just some more horsepower instead of changing the gear ratio. I dont know much of electronics so I wouldn't want to mess up anything around there. Just wanted to see if it was an OK thing to do in this bike. And like in 3 months i'm having my drivers liscence. I wanted to do this also, because for me it doesnt feel right to not have done anything to it, it felt like a bit of shame. I dont know.

The Mikuni TMX28 is a very good carburetor, I wouldn't swap it for an inferior Chinese part. You'll risk an assortment of fueling issues which can lead to detonation and engine destruction.
Carbon fibre reeds are your cheapest option for a "Performance" upgrade. I didn't notice any difference with them but that's your entry level upgrade. The Zeeltronic is plug and play and comes with several maps to choose from. As I say, single biggest upgrade from me, but the UK ignition system was restricted and I don't know about any other regions.

I see you also recomended me the Zeeltronic. I'll make some research about it. The main problem for this bike at least in Spain (where I'm from) is that there's not really any market for it, and it's a shame really. I saw the carburetor as the "accesible small powering piece".
I just dont want to change the cylinder or big things like that, just a small thing to change the performance of the bike without going for too much, just a little push. If Mikuni is good brand then i'll search for a 32 Mikuni to keep the line of being always equiped with Mikuni.
I bought the bike with a Gianelli exhaust with homologation. I see almost every DT with installed Arrow, DEP, Turbokit or Gianelli exhausts kits. It's the only aftermarket thing installed to it.
Now before changing carburetor or anything else, I need to fix the regulator, alternator and battery, and then i'll see.
I see you're also pretty close with the bike, and very aknowledged about it. I really aprecciate the advice you're giving me.
