Knocking/rattling from lower right side?

The other day my DT developed a rather angry rattling sound that comes from the lower right side. It oddly is worst at some 2000-3000 rpm and then seem to rather diminish as revs go up. Or the noise is merely drenched out by the exhaust, hard to say.
I can't see that the bike performs differently, but the loud and violent nature of the sound indicates that it is not something to ignore.
Anyone can diagnose this right away? Otherwise I will have to remove the engine and tear it down completely. Which I sort of look forward to, actually - but it would be great to know in advance what to expect and look for. Clutch? Oil pump? Crank bearings?
It has done 46000 km, still on its first piston, so I suppose it is not that strange. I guess I ought to replace everything replaceable while I am at it.

Sometimes you can hear the little end rattle, if it's never been replaced then that can cause some noise.
Another one can be the right hand side powervalve has come loose. Can whip the cover off and make sure it's all secure.
Be careful removing the cover though as they have a tendency to crack off.

@Hark_Ptooie I'd be looking at the right side powervalve cap judging by your description. One of these broke once on an RD500LC I used to have (same part) on a group ride about 60 miles from home and even over the sound of four cylinders I could hear it, I honestly thought it had blown up and I was very relieved to find it was only that.

I crawled around the bike today trying to locate where the clatter came from, paying extra attention to the powervalve cap. Holding a screwdriver against various covers to feel vibrations.
I am far from certain, but I think it is the water pump, actually. I might disassemble that and have a look later this week.

I had that last year and thought the engine was shot.
Turned out it was a nut on one of the shafts that had come loose and was rattling against the inside of the cover. It could not go anywhere, but it made a noise.
Accessing it requires that you remove the cover which means the oil will leave the case. The lowest of the screws around its perimeter has a copper washer and allows for draining the case before removing it.

Clutch can make noises too, for example if the rubbers between the gear and clutch cage have gone bad. Check the play if you remove the cover.
