DT owner from Dublin !

Hi sean here ,
I currently own a 2003 dt125r that is completely standard that I drive to work on every day and have owned for 2 years now ,
I am wanting to give it a bit of a clean up with some nice new parts
Exhaust and plastics etc
Anyone have any advice on exhaust systems ? Which gives best performance , and also reed valve mods , has anybody used carbon ones ?
Any help would be great !
Thanks in advance -

I've not tried many After market pipes, the Dep is very good but it is a poor quality item. I used to ride my DT every day 18 miles to college and back, all weather for 2 years. The only way to preserve the Dep is meticulous cleaning. And it still dissolves at an incredible rate.
The 'Big One' or Fresco as it used to be, really good for torque. I actually prefer it for round town or offroad. Only problem is that it fits like crap round the manifold, I was not impressed.
Only problem with the Arrow and Gianneli Expansion pipes is that they are not plated, they really should be painted to preserve them.
A 'gutted' out Standard Expansion pipe is actually one of the best, it just has a weight disadvantage over an Aftermarket Expansion pipe.
As for Reeds, those Carbon ones on eBay are not very good. The standard ones are just fine.
One of the best upgrades I found was fitting lighter Alloy rims. Just that much more of pleasure to handle in all weather conditions. Really makes a difference.
Found these, they are pricey..

@Darty Cheers man I was thinking of purchasing the boyesen reeds as they are prob the best , will try and gut the standard exhaust and see how I get on just getting the time to do it is the problem , the hand made exhausts are very tempting though !

@seandtr I have never had to do one, Only got to try them. I found a nice tutorial before with good pictures. I'll have a look. But check out Scrims site first. Give you a gist of what to expect http://www.scrimsmustangsclassicyamaharestorations.com/derestricting-the-yamaha-dt125r-1988-through-to-2007.html

Hello Welcome!
My advice would be this.
If you depend on the bike for work, leave it WELL ALONE!
They are not made for all out power. They're dependable work horses that you use day in day out without fail!
However! This is a forum. And we encourage such modding
I have tried the lot. Gram for Gram the best way to get more power of any DT is to chuck the ignition in the bin and grab a Zeeltronic ignition system. They make SO much of a difference! Well worth it!
A Dep pipe gives fantastic mid-range over rev capability. In my experience the Big one pipes are really stiffled at the top end and as such I don't recommend them. Although have never owned one, I've been around these bikes long enough to see the complaints.
I have sold my DEP and now run a custom hand made stainless pipe. Have had that for two years and it's still it perfect condition. Uhmm this is mainly because I HAVE NEVER FITTED IT LOL! Buit I will. It's going to be fitted very soon.
I run Hy-Tech Carbon reeds.
So reeds are an interesting one. Back in DAY reeds were made out of metal or other. They were either too ridgid, or too soft. Yamaha fit their bikes with a plastic type reed which is both strong and flexible. So they're perfect in other words. I bought the Hy-tech reeds because they're £20 and then you can tick the box to say YES I have X.
Agree with Wheels, things to reduce weight will always work well. Reducing weight not only increases speed, but theoretically is GOOD for the engine. Less load less wear. So win win.
I have spent many hours working on my DT.
Reeds, ignition, ported barrel. Exhausts, cabs and inlet. I know what works well on these bikes. And best money you can spend is Exhaust and ignition. The rest I'd leave alone.
I wouldn't personally recommend the Athena kit. But someone is in the process of modifying it to be a lot better. Now that would be interesting!

This is the chap I got mine from!
Had it within a week. If you want all out power then this is the ONLY pipe to consider. Wrap around pipes are compromise for ground clearance and power...
But I've gone SM so...
