I've been reading through a few things and i've noticed that some of you would replace the top end before it goes bust. So would you not rebuild your top end until there's a loss of compression? And when it comes to the bottom end on a derestricted dt 125 r 2002 with regular barrel when would that want to be considered to be rebuilt?, when it starts rattling?

@sgt-robuck-5 if you notice loss of power or certainly rattling it’s really too late you want to do it earlier to avoid a seized piston and mainly to avoid your piston coming apart and screw wing your barrel up as it’s only gonna be more work and more money to fix

@declan and around 12k miles it should be rebuilt I can and should last longer but if you want to grab it before failure that’s your best bet most dts will stick to the 12k margin unless your bike is heavily tuned which is not your case so don’t worry about that

@declan interesting piece of info! Thanks. I have my dt and the last owner didn't replace the top end at all so I'm wondering if there's anysigns to tell if my topend is strong. Or is it worth investing in some pistons and rings in the near future? Clock has about 15,500 miles

It you have the skills, its worth to invest the relative few bucks to atleast buy a top end gasket kit and replace the piston.
              Super cheap insurance.

@sgt-robuck-5 mitaka pistons are pretty cheap and I’d say deffo have a look at it when I pulled mine apart my piston was cracked so I’m glad I did
