Connecting Rod freeplay and its lifespan
-
Hello, i just started to rebuild top end on my 2006 125X and realised that my rod has 0,5mm side clearance on big end which is OK according to the manual but it has aprox. 1,5mm side to side freeplay on small end. So i dont know if it is still okay to run and how long rods and big end bearings on DTs last.
Thank You!

Hey bud! I don’t know about measuring free-play and stuff. I really don’t have the tools…
I will say when it starts to make noise change it . How many miles you have on the motor? Was it making any noises before? What made you want to change the top end? I thought that Dtx’s ran on 4FU barrels?…I usually gently jiggle/lever the rotor to see if there is any ‘clicking’ and movement other than flex. If your bearings were shot you’d of heard it and your seals would (most likely) be shot as well. If it was running fine and free of ‘chatter’ before, I wouldn’t overthink or worry about it. The main bearings last longer than the big end. You’d of heard it if it was worn…

I really wouldn’t worry about it. I just took apart my last engine that I put 30K miles on, I don’t know how many were on it before, at least 14. That thing is due a new rod/ect Even then the up/down play is ‘ok’…
Is yours a 4fu or a 3mb barrel? I’m just wondering what was the reason for 3rebuilt top ends?…

@SpookDog I dont know exact model of my barrel but it doesnt have Nicasil, it has Cast iron sleeve. I am doing rebore, new piston kit (piston, rings, piston pin and small end rod bearing). I am glad that i started the top end rebuild because the piston had some scratches and looked ready to be replaced.

DTRE/X are the same as the DTR except they came with an electric start instead of a kicker. The stator and cranks are therefore different but everything else about the engine is the same.
It's only the 4GW TZRs and 4DL TDRs that came with the 4FU cylinders to my knowledge. There may have been other designations that came with 4FUs but none in DTR configuration.
I always wanted to try it out myself and a few units back in the day. Never did though, I am happy to park DTR development for the time being, happy enough with the Athena 170 kit for the moment.
