DT200R Build
-
Hello,
I think its time to introduce my DT200R build, but lets start from the beginning.
In the summer of 2013 I bought my first 'big' bike, a '96 DT125R. It was the time when these bikes were cheap. The one I found was about 30km from me and me and my buddy jumped on our bicycles to check it out(we werent 18 then). It was a bit beat up bike, we had to bleed the brakes before a test ride but it was cheap and overall nice bike.
Here's a pic from my first ride after buying the bike:I learned how to work on it, done the full engine rebuild and was just riding around with a buddy and sometimes my gf back then(still have some xxx pics of that ).
In 2015 I bought a DT200R without the pink slip.(check the back of that Saxo VTS in the background, that was a fun car!)Only had one ride on the 200 before I disassembled both of the bikes. Plan was simple, to put the 200 goods into the 125 road-legal frame. So I powder coated the frame first:
And then I bought my WR200(which is in another thread). I completely forgot about my DT's and just had fun riding and working on the WR. Meanwhile I bought another WR for parts for my ride, and then another one(both of them were beaters tho).
Fast forward to 2020, when I actually started working on the bike:
(DT200R shock on the left, WR200 shock on the right, after the service, wasnt cheap )Some suspension work:
How the bike looks now:
Front brake is pretty much done(rebuild caliper, brake pump, new HEL hose). While putting together the rear brake caliper i butched my finger. Im having problems with the rear brake caliper mount as it comes from TDR and I had to drill the axle hole from 15mm to 20mm and now it sometimes touches the disc, it will need to be fixed.
But today I put together the engine!(almost done)
Its a 3XP engine from the WR's I bought for parts for mine main bike over the years.
First pic is from 2019 when I started putting together this engineThese pics are from today:
And I still have the 3ET engine somewhere in the shed. But while I have a 3XP engine almost ready to ride, I dont think Im gonna spend my money on rebuilding the 3ET now.
Generally, at the end I'd want my bike to look like this:
-
Bike is almost finished.
Chosen to go with the 3ET engine instead of 3XP.
Still waiting for some new jets to set the carb the best way I can.
Other than that I need to change the clutch plates as I chose some cheap stuff and its just not holding on with the 200cc
Rev video
Not perfect yet
More info will follow. -
@Challenger looking great canโt wait get my Dt200 engine up and running
, you donโt mind me asking do you but have you got a link to the exhaust youโve got -
@mhbikesnbits Its FMF pipe made for WR200. Needs some small mods to fit DT200R but works great.
-
@Challenger thanks for that, will need to invest in one when I get round to it
-
@mhbikesnbits Heres some info on the installation I found on the internet. Did some things different but generally its good info.
-
@Challenger that's a good bit of information right there. I did think about fitting that exhaust to my bike before but wasn't entirely sure that it would fit. It's a dt125r with the Athena 170 bore kit fitted so figured the 200 exhaust may be better for it. Since we now know that it fits the 200 (albeit with a bit of heating and hammering) I presume it will also fit mine. Do you know if I'm correct in thinking that the external dimensions of the top ends on the 125/200 are near identical?

@Challenger thanks pal much appreciated will be a big help

The exhaust on the 125 is 32mm diameter and on the 200 is 37 it won't work well with that pipe, you will have a big step for the return pressure wave that pushes back the mixture at the exhaust port. The 170 has 32mm exhaust also like the 125.

@markus-w The athena 170cc is a great upgrade for the 125cc engine. But I wouldn't go with the 200cc pipe on it. I had that kit with athena complete exhaust system and it worked really great. But when I installed that exhaus on a DT200R it sucked. After every gear change there was a drop in power and had to wait for the engine to get to higher revs for some more power.
So even tho the 170cc uses the 200cc piston size, the stroke stays the same, and I think you should use the 125cc pipes for your setup. (again, in my opinion athena pipe is the best one for the dtr)

Here's the vid of the 170cc setup I had back in the day, crashed the bike later on and it went for parts. But it was running really good with the top end and exhaust from the same manufacturer. And it didnt even have the power valve plugged in.
Generally athena pipe for dt125/170 is very similar to fmf pipe for wr200 when it comes to power delivery. It doesnt make your bike top-end-of-revs-only like the giannelli pipe does. Its more of a mid-tier revs concentred pipe. While the oem pipes for both of the bikes are concentred more on the low-tier of revs. Its more visible especially in the wr200, but you get the idea. -
Here's how it looks on SM wheels. I dont ride a lot on this bike, as I prefer off-roading, but its nice to have a garage queen like this:
-
@Challenger Such a lovely colour scheme. Wheels look mega too!
-
Think it looks better with the blue seat
-
@markus-w Yes, they had a blue seat originally. It suits the frame colour I chose, but the frame plastic covers I used from YZ400F are a different kind of blue so it stands out a bit now. Originally 200's had white frame, but I didnt like that much.
