Where’s the best place to get a standard 3mb/3BN head ported, skimmed and squish reshaped?
As I’m pulling my head apart I may as well treat myself and the bike a little. You guys have always spoke highly of a decent port job so I’d love to see the difference over stock

Ask Calum, he’s got a ported barrel... -

Ask Calum, he’s got a ported barrel...wrote on 20 Nov 2022, 08:35 last edited by@SpookDog I didn't love the 3MB00P barrel. I have recently sent another barrel to Mick for porting however
When I swapped out the ported barrel for the Athena kit I was actually impressed with the porting work. At the end of the day, the DTR is not a fast bike. It's pitiful compared to other 125s. As I say, getting the squishband adhusted for your setup, a good pipe and a Zeeltronic is about all you need for the DTR. Combine that with the Athena 170 kit and you'll be laughing. But it is all down to personal preference.

Yeah, weirdly enough i prefer the standard 3mb barrel over the 3mbp that I brought. It is definitely all about preference and riding style. I personally don’t like having to keep the motor in power band all the time, I like the ‘usability’ of the standard barrel -

But I would recommend the Athena 170 kit for that reason.
Sacrafice overrev for pure torque grunt. Many years ago, I didn't sing its praises as I only had the DT and wanted an all out weapon. I don't think I ever achieved that. The RS is a totally different kettle of fish and I love it. But the DT with Athena kit is my daily* warrior! It's just comfortable and grunty and for that reason I would recommend it.
I liked it so much I bought another one to send to Mick to see if he can work some magic on it. I shall report back what happens.
*I haven't ridden the DT since July. I haven't ridden a bike since July, I mainly cycle/run everywhere I go since neither of my cars are on the road

Cycling tho I can get my head around! It’s amazing how much ground you can cover at 15 mph, while keeping it going for ages as long as you pace yourself
I think the porting difference makes sense in a road bike/TZR or an Aprilia. Your head is the same height as a Dtr headlight and you are aero dynamic. I imagine its like the difference between riding a Dtr with & without a 20 mph headwind!

Loose the mirrors hand guards rear foot pegs change or loose the indicators for a smaller LED style loose the nobly tires for more road orientated and a recon you’d get an extra 2-3mph and on set of DT clocks that’s easily 5mph ! Lol
