    I'm new here....

Looking to buy a dt 125 for the new year.
Can anyone recommend which year is best and also what the differences are between the different models ie X, R and RE - which is easiest to derestrict and which will be quicker?

If anyone has one for sale too please hit me up!

    Cheers

@AndyJay Hi and welcome. The first question is what sort of riding do you want the DT for???

      Hey,

There is not really much to say, other than the X is a Supermoto and is usually more sought after.

The RE's a doddle to derestrict and the R's range in what is necessary to do to derestrict them, where appropriate.

Some swear by the early models performance, but I maintain that they are not performance machines.

They are just superb everyday low maintainance bikes.

@NINJA It will be for road use only. Commuting to and from work daily then having a blast over the moors on a weekend πŸ‘πŸΌ

@AndyJay The DTX would make a better commuter bike, much better brakes and road wheels too, but no good off road. Whilst a DTR would be the opposite, if you put some tyres on a DTR like the Avon's Trailriders or the new Trekriders, then you would have a DTR with much better road manners for-sure. πŸ˜‰

I adore my DT, but probably had more fun on continental offroad tyres, for both road and offroad use, than I ever have with my SM setup.

It was so tail happy it was great fun! Yes a bit dangerous at times sure.

@NINJA Cheers for these links, currently in talks with the fella selling the bike in the 2nd link with the decals on. What do you reckon it's roughly worth just from looking at the pics?

@AndyJay Wow, not 2 and half lol. I felt 1700 is asking too much.

If it were original, or done tastefully, maybe.

That, or either these bikes have shot up in value since I was last on the look out for one (which was nearly a decade ago!)

It's worth what you wanna pay, in the end if you're like me you'll be throwing your wages at a perfectly running bike whatever happens, I'd hate to know how much money I've got into my DT over the past couple years, I'm betting I'd struggle to return half of it!

@Glynn123 Isn't that the joy of owning a classic tho? Yes owning an older vehicle has many frustrations and does ultimately cost us owners some expense in the long run. But then we get the pleasure of owning and riding a classic bike, which not only brings happiness, but also the satisfaction of modding and restoring a timeless bike!!! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

No matter which way you cut it they cost money but just because you pay extra for a nice one doesent mean it’s going to be any better than the cheaper one it just means you have less money to fix the faults you find, I’d just buy the one you like most and don’t look back lol

@declan To an extent, but there is an art in buying the right one for the money. There is more to it than buying the one you like. And seeing as you've bought motors in the past that needed work, I'm sure you'd appreciate this more than most.

It's definitely worth doing your research, and buying a motor that needs as little work as possible, if your intention is to use it,

If you're after a project, then the cheaper the outlay the better. Generally. Just make sure it's not stolen or a write off.
