@oldman Maybe you could get this bike cheap, keep the panels and anything else you want, break the bike and sell the rest as parts for spares???

@louis-james That's Team Phillipe dude, so not originals. They would however be better than old knackered ones for-sure. 😉

Contacted Tommy Keane and no joy. The Portugal panels are a Honda cr colour and the panels aren't as good as originals, did think of them but thanks anyway.
The bike in the ad looks to have a full sticker kit on and the panels don't look any better than I already have. Long way from me as well, live right on the south coast, but thanks anyway, appreciated. If I came home with another bike I would be looking for accommodation and not body panels!😁
The panels I have are ok but each has small defects, have gone the extra mile with this bike and want to finish as best I can.
Thanks for the part nos, will have a good search tomorrow, hopefully something will surface.
I know I am being a bit anal about the panels but if a jobs worth doing, etc etc.
Anyway, thanks for all the tips and help, it really is appreciated.

I know, but always had the bike red, great colour, will keep trying and the white 89 is my winter project, I feel lucky!

To be fair, I have purchased the rear fender and rear side panels from Portugal and can't complain, perfect colour match and fitment, I would have bought the radiators scoops but they are not the original shape.
Very happy with the quality, so I'm guessing colour is the main problem.

If he did a colour match I would use them, but would still be searching for originals. Have some of the white panels from him that I used when my son was riding the dt to protect the red bodywork in storage.

I had black panels from him for the black DTR in my avatar but iirc they were smaller than the genuine items so wouldnt use them on a 100% stock resto

@oldman a good paint shop could match the red and smooth off them. I've seen a few wr200 and wr500 projects where they do that because parts are very rare

Yes but paint doesn't stick to flexible plastic very well for very long

It does if you do it properly and use 2k plastic primer !

Personal experience is for replacement (new) panels as the colour will be better and the finish more resilient.

I know that there are flexo-plast type primers that can be used by my own experience of them has been that the paint still crazes and cracks, especially around mounting points and cannot adhere where a panel bends.

My knowledge is old and possibly out of date but I have worked in the industry (Dream Machine) back in the day.

My knowledge is old and possibly out of date but I have worked in the industry (Dream Machine) back in the day.

Your experience is definitely out of date. Painted panels are a lot more durable than brand new panels if they are done properly with 2k plastic primer then 2k primer and 2k top coat, I paint mudguards and sidepanels for old air cooled DT,s for people all over the country who are restoring there bikes as they are NLA new even used are hard to get and they never crack if they craze thats a reaction to crap on the plastic. All you have to do is look at a new panel and its scratched or marked however like you I use new when I restore my own bikes if I can. I can tell you now you will never replace the Red plastics with new ones these days you might find the od new piece here and there on the internet. I struggled to get a full set years ago and I had access to the Yamaha system back then.
