1988 rebuild update

Personal experience is for replacement (new) panels as the colour will be better and the finish more resilient.
I know that there are flexo-plast type primers that can be used by my own experience of them has been that the paint still crazes and cracks, especially around mounting points and cannot adhere where a panel bends.
My knowledge is old and possibly out of date but I have worked in the industry (Dream Machine) back in the day.
Your experience is definitely out of date. Painted panels are a lot more durable than brand new panels if they are done properly with 2k plastic primer then 2k primer and 2k top coat, I paint mudguards and sidepanels for old air cooled DT,s for people all over the country who are restoring there bikes as they are NLA new even used are hard to get and they never crack if they craze thats a reaction to crap on the plastic. All you have to do is look at a new panel and its scratched or marked however like you I use new when I restore my own bikes if I can. I can tell you now you will never replace the Red plastics with new ones these days you might find the od new piece here and there on the internet. I struggled to get a full set years ago and I had access to the Yamaha system back then.

Like i said my knowledge is 15+ years out of date and was based on employment and personal experience.
Glad to hear things have improved as like you say some colours have faded into history (pun intended).

@scrimsmustang Thanks for the link, sent request for purchase, you are a star, and this arrived in the post today.
Also been looking for grey seat/cover but the ones I have seen all look darker than the sales brochure pics. Can you recommend someone to supply?
Thanks again, very much appreciated -

Looks pretty light
Thats the same as the ones I used on my Red and Purple ones. They are OK but the writing is Black on a Purple one.

Seat cover ordered, at a loose end waiting(still) for my wheels, thought I would start on the white 89. Sidestand bent so thought I would whip that off to straighten out. Bolt loose (I thought) and removed sidestand, after straightening went to refit and thread shot in sidestand, hence the loose bolt. Wonder what else I will find?

Did you get any joy with the Red panel in Switzerland ?
You have a White 89

@scrimsmustang Hello, apologies for the delay in replying, I emailed them in English and German, also spoke to them but couldn't communicate effectively. Going to try again next week with an interpreter! German speaking friend of a friend. Have also found panels elsewhere listed 2 x scoops and mudguard, ordered and hoping they are correct (stock nos match) received the 1990 decals and grey seat cover and picked up my wheels today YAAAAAAY, if my friend back from holiday hope to have tyres fitted this weekend. Also received vehicle history from DVLA, sold in London first, went to Dunstable, back to London, then surrey, back to london, and then to me. Colour change registered 26.05.91 and new engine 06.09.91, never paid much attention as frame ends in 01459 and engine 00540, so somewhere there is an engine that matches my frame no. Is the engine no early production? Not sure how the vin nos work. Busy weekend fitting seat cover, red fork guards and getting tyres done hopefully
