@calum theres no lights on it and its running on premix, but i,m happy enough with it,what oil/petrol mix do most people use on these bikes, its running 32:1 but seems to smoke a lot.Think i will do a full stripdown and restore next winter.

@greaser58 The mixture of oil is going to depend on the type of oil used and its quality.

I tend to run around 50:1 on Silkolene fully synthetic. But you have to appreciate these engines weren't designed to run without the oilpump.

It should smoke regardless, I'd rather it smokes a little, thus ensuring oil delivery.

That said, fitting the oil pump back on isn't hard and well worth it. Especially as you don't want to be worrying about the oil mixture everytime you go out on it.

@calum Ok thanks for the info, will go with the silkolene 50:1, i prefer premix to the pump set-up,at least you know its getting oil.

@greaser58 Any where from 50:1 to 30:1 should suit the DTR.

Hello, welcome to the forum! I've never pre-mixed with a DT, never had to. But as for enduro bikes and crossers I've owned over the years the general rule is you want a 2% mixture. So with a 10 litre tank you'll want 0.2 litres of oil, or 200 millilitres. However those bikes were designed to run on premix, as Calum said the DT wasn't but it really shouldn't make much of a difference.

Just make sure when you stop, close the fuel valve and let the bike die off so you have an empty carb. It'll avoid you having to clean it up so often, and give the bike a good shake before you start up otherwise you'll be running rich and that could result to you chewing through spark plugs.

@minia That's good advise, I wonder whether for an everyday road bike whether this is actually necessary. Some bikes, such as the Aprilia RS/MX 125, have the oil fed into the carb instead of the inlet.

@calum do you think perhaps in the inlet the oil has less chance to fully mix with the incoming fuel meaning the oil is thicker and lubricates a little better?

@declan I don't think it makes much difference. The oil doesn't ignite like the fuel, residue oil should coat the bore, which will eventually burn (hence the smoke) but should be replaced with more oil. Therefore, I don't think it makes much difference
