Water issue with the dt
-
So I think I made one of these posts a while ago my dt would stop working when I were off-roading if I hit any type of puddle wet grass was usually fine I went out in a storm last night and soon as my bike hit a puddle it died took a while to start up and when it did it barely ran wouldn’t idle I could ride it so long as I stayed at a constant rpm any sudden changes and it would just die as quick as turning the key I figured all these problems would be fixed since all of my new wiring and connections but obviously not the video linked is the day after bike is fairly dry in the video bike is warmed up.

I had a similar problem earlier this year. It behaved almost exactly like yours except it would do it in any weather. In my case it was faulty gearbox side crankshaft seals. You might have a look at your transmission oil and test if it smells like gas.

@yannikmeister well in all honesty my crank seals are probably due soon but it’s only water that causes this frustrating thing is there’s no obvious culprit

It looks like I’ve been getting water in my stator but doesent seem to be the issues I’ll put a new gasket on it all the same another weird thing when I lock my rpm around 3k so I can have a strong idle it will run for about 30s then just turn off not a splutter or fade out it will just switch off
-
I’d get a pump up spray bottle and squirt it down on a hot dry day. Start on the obvious ignition bits. Plug, coil, CDI. Try the sidestand switch as well maybe. My mate had probs with the sidestand/ignition relay as well. It would only start with the ignition switch off...
The high rev thing is weird though. Have you looked at the plug straight after it dies? See if it’s wet? Specially if you been playing with the jets...

Is the strong Tickover a wet day or any day thing?
Also you got a spark now but is it still wet where you are?
It’s not always easy trying to fault find without the bike in front of you. I had a CDI fail on me once and that was (I was told) affected by temperature. If you warmed it up with a hairdryer it was supposed to make it work. It was an intermittent fault that I couldn’t pinpoint. Especially when there are two separate ‘symptoms ‘
Let us know if there’s any other faults or things that come to mind...Also, what year is your bike? I’m wondering if it has the early stator with three coils. One for charging, one for lights and one for ignition...

That can’t be right. It’s just too weird...
You need to try and recreate the fault. Make your own puddle. Have the bike running and slowly(without splashing) push it in and see what happens. Don’t forget the tires chuck up a line of spray in the wet. Straight up at the front of the engine and under the tank area. That would be my first guess...
If it’s like you say though, maybe it’s a weird earth problem. Doesn’t make any sense though...
How much did the loom cost? I’ve only seen silly prices for used ones. £150+!With the stator I was gonna suggest changing the ignition coil, it’s not easy. Needs soldering I think. I’ve got one from an old stator that I know was working that you can have...
-
@SpookDog thanks for the offer but I tested the stator a while back @oldman actually gifted it me the bike still won’t start so I’ll keep you posted when I can get it running then go about wetting things the loom is the original although it was hacked to bits the worst I’ve seen I put new connections on everything all the connections will be tested in due time
-
This is kind of off topic but included the same hardware so I'll ask when connecting up the cdi what's the minimum amount of wires you can have plugged in I did the two pulse coil wires and the two primary coil wires but there wasn't spark on my spare engine
-
I’d think it would need them all plugged in. Power from the ignition coil has to get in from the stator. You have got the older 3 coil stators?
It’d need to be plugged into the loom. I won’t spark out of the frame. Are you trying to get it to spark ‘on the bench’? -
@SpookDog I have a bike I'm building with an 05 dtx engine I'm trying to do a crossover of parts the bike has spark with it's cdi but won't fire so I would like to try my dtr cdi on it last time I did so I couldn't get a spark since my dtr needs to be stripped down I figure nows a good time to try again
