Another newbie

Hi all, newbie to the forum here. I have a 2001 DT125R which I've had since it was a year old. Currently I have it in pieces as I'm wanting to restore it. It's been one of the most fun bikes I've ever had and am looking forward to getting it rebuilt.
Going to have the frame powder coated and if I can find some WR 200 forks and yokes put USD forks on it.
Looking forward to learning what can be swapped and changed to improve it from this forum. -
@CYANIDE-2600 Welcome mate! Look forward to seeing some pictures of your bike. Those are good mods you intend to do however the wr200 yolks won't fit your bike the steering stem is to long unfortunately so it's not going to be a straight swap I'm afraid. What I did myself was use a set of yz250 USD forks and had the steering stem pressed out the DTR yolks and re-pressed into the YZ250 yolks then it's a bolt on job which worked flawlessly! There is also another method using a bearing cup and a guide on here on how to make USD forks fit using this method but just thought I'd point that out to you about the forks.

I did originally intend on having the frame chromed but I decided powder coating the frame in a metallic black would work better as was advised to chrome the frame properly some of the welds would have to be redone or at the very least cleaned up some and there would be the risk of it chipping.
I started off on an Aprilia RX 50 (single cylinder two stroke), then on to a Kawasaki GPx 250 Ninja (parallel twin four stroke) and then the DT125R. I have had it off the clock two up (private road officer!) and the powerband seemed to not drop off till the redline, I think it has been ported by its first owner as it really does seem to be very peaky. This is with the reed switch still in place behind the clocks. It has fully functional YPVS which I think is from a French bike as it has the markings 3RM-F on the YPVS cables. Cylinder head has 3BN and Y-2 and the engine number starts with 4BL.
It has some other number as well under the engine which has been etched in which is not consistent with Yamaha, it's SSN23. I have no idea as to what that's for as I've not seen it on any other DT. Stan Stephens number maybe if ported by a pro??
I've had a look through the exhaust and it looks like it's had some porting done, not the usual rough ports.
After I got the DT I went on to a Yamaha TDM850 (parallel twin four stroke, induction sound like a snorting hippo and exhaust like half of Subaru Impreza) then a Yamaha TDR250 (parallel twin two stroke) and then a Suzuki GSX-R1100 (four cylinder four stroke, modified for drag racing and sprinting) and a KTM 640 LC4 (single cylinder four stroke. Sounds like a V1 flying bomb on full chat, and wheelies for fun if ham fisted) then on to a Honda CRM 250 (single cylinder two stroke) and a Kawasaki Zephyr 1100 (four cylinder four stroke, looks like the old Z900 of the 70's but much beefier).
I still have 5 bikes including the DT, but the DT is the one I most enjoy probably as it gave the biggest impression as after years of watching McGrath vs Carmichael it was like having a motocross bike for the road. Sure the CRM250 was faster and the KTM beats both but the DT definitely at 17 was like living the dream lol. I feared I'd be looking back with rose tinted glasses but I had a go on one a few months ago and it still made me grin from ear to ear.

That's as was before I stripped it down. I've got the engine in my kitchen at the moment been cleaning it up and got a new gearbox cover to fit though I may paint the old one and keep the new one as a spare. Will take lots of pictures as I get stuff done.

I just love it when you see rebuild threads with bikes stripped down and being rebuilt in peoples kitchen's and lounges. Their partners must either be super tolerant or it's "Dude WTF, get that crappy oil bucket outa my sitting room, or I'll call the scrap metal man!!!" LOL

Haha. Well the DT was in my bedroom, infact the frame, seat and a few other bits still are, engine got brought to the kitchen as it's got tile floor so less worried about oil making mess and wife seems fine with it so far, but it's early days I guess lol.
My dad rebuilt his RD350LC and that was in his attic for aaages till he got all the bits sorted on it.
I'm hoping I will not be taking too long getting the DT back in one piece as I want to get back out on the thing. -

And speaking of having bikes in the house.. When I got my first ped at 16 I insisted it sat in my bedroom until I did my cbt, and sat in my bedroom it did.
And the ped I got when I was 12 did also. What tolerant parents I have -

And the ped I got when I was 12 did also. What tolerant parents I haveHaha my parents didn't mind me having my bike in the house, first night I got the DT it was in the kitchen and that's where I kept it til the insurance kicked in.
Once the frame is powder coated and I've got the engine cleaned up, new clutch kit fitted and got the monkey-metal Yamaha screws changed for stainless capheads I'll be building it up in the bedroom at my folks house. Ideal as plenty room to work on it. List of things I know off the top of my head I need to buy yet are a new inlet manifold, new reeds and some hoses, stainless fasteners, bearings and stuff so I'll use time between doing stuff to buy stuff.
I do remember though the things that annoyed me were the headlamp is pants. Will change that for a 35w hid as they are available now for them. Will change the clocks illumination to led as well as the indicators and the tail lamp. Draw less power so shouldn't get the dull lights on idle like they usually do.
