Hello everyone
Had a bit of a nightmare with the DT125RE. Was fixing sticky throttle issue, sorted that and then had it running for around 10 mins.
After 10 mins of running I gave it a good rev and all of a sudden lots of smoke from under the tank and it was the regulator/rectifier. Luckily tank and seat wasn’t tightened, quickly turned off bike removed them and hosed it down. Didn’t catch alight.
Now could I get your thoughts to why this has happened and advice please to go about sorting this. Obviously won’t be trying anything with the burnt out regulator on it now.
Things worth noting..
- Aftermarket £30 rectifier/reg was put on September last year as couldn’t get OEM as they don’t sell anymore. Replaced back then as battery wasn’t charging and this solved the issue.
- Starter Solenoid does click and took a few attempts of it clicking for it to turn over ? Not sure if overtime that would burn out the regulator? (Was literally waiting for new one in post)
- Whilst running for a good 10 mins the starter was accidentally pressed whilst tightening hand controls after fixing sticky throttle. Shortly after it was then I gave it a good rev then started smoking.
- Earths all seemed good
- Red wire to regulator 4 pin plug burnt out
- Checked battery voltage and was 12 volts
Do you think it was just a faulty eBay regulator? What checks can we do? My mate says he has a power probe to check the voltages btw but will need guidance
Do you know if I can get a replacement 4 pin plug for the regulator/rectifier as like I say it is slightly damaged from where it got hot?
Links if poss please?
Looking online it seems a common thing over various bikes and that the regulator /rectifier is at fault.
Would appreciate your advice. Obviously Don’t want it happening again. Just lucky I didn’t get chance to go for a ride with it all bolted down..
Cheers
