  • Changing to larger 18T front sprocket, does chain tension/wheel position need adjusting too?
    F FloWolF

    @Stevie-Wonder Thanks for that, appreciated.

    I'm actually still without a diagnosis, but it's been pretty obvious for a long time.

    And I'm not afraid of the bike at all, it's a different set of a different kind of fears and once I get past those I'm back to myself, who learns by osmosis and has a natural practical sense.

    I fell in love with 2 strokes when I was younger, but I never had the money to do it well then, so just rode beaters around the fields, but they're in my blood and I follow a lot of the 2 stroke fb pages, try to keep up with any news, even read the tuner's handbook for fun a couple or so years ago. I'm not about to willingly trade my way out of owning this one. I'll get my head around everything soon enough.

    Thanks again!

  • Original on-bike toolbox, rubber cover/lid?.. (1992 DT125R, ex-France)
    F FloWolF

    @HOTSHOT-III Cheers buddy yes that's the thing - the box is in good nick, I just ripped the lock tab off. I could try and make something up, but it'd be a shame as the bike's currently all original/unrestored.

    Thanks again!

  • Properly Sorted with her 18 tooth sprocket and a carb clean!
    F FloWolF

    @SpookDog

    Sitting on a tall bike with an upright riding stance almost exactly increases apparent speed by 33.33(recurring)%! 🙂

    Mine's a French import, 'unrestricted' with fully working PV. Don't know what that means in actual RW BHP though, but it seems to be enough for me.

    I hadn't noticed unusual wind noise but then again, my last helmet was the earlier Duke, and I tend to ride everywhere with my visor open at least an inch anyway so I always get tons of wind noise 🙂

  • Changing to larger 18T front sprocket, does chain tension/wheel position need adjusting too?
    F FloWolF

    @HOTSHOT-III

    Over-sharing seems to come with the spectrum territory heheheh!

    Carb strip done, all back together and running like a dream!

    My one main cockup, I bent the last few mm end of the f'n slide needle didn't I! Never bent, broke or lost one before, but luckily I got it back right and it works perfectly again.

    It's always the demons and the walls they build that present me with the biggest obstacles to overcome, except for where money is the issue heheheh!

    Cheers, and thanks. 🙂

    @Calum I'm far from alone with what I'm going through, and there's always people having a tougher time and doing better with it, so wtf eh heheheh! 🙂

    As for the bike, well it came from Glenn, hasn't done much mileage and far as I can tell, is otherwise more-or-less in top, unrestored, original condition.

    Anyway, all the work is done now, 18 tooth on the front and a test ride done, she purrs and flies - I posted about it briefly with some photos earlier.

    And, I'd move my own legs on before I'd move this bike on now.

    As for taking it steady, I've been trying most of my life heheheh, cheers again muckah.

  • Changing to larger 18T front sprocket, does chain tension/wheel position need adjusting too?

    @Calum

    My heart belongs to the ring-a-ding-ding, though! 🙂

    I plan on doing a few longer journeys on this as well so an e-bike wouldn't have suited, but I did consider it.

    Also I'm currently riding via serial CBT's on L plates!

    The day-to-day stuff I'll get my head around in no time, and I'm lucky enough, that when I need bigger jobs doing, my local bike mechanics are ''Rea Racing'', not only an actual racing team/family here in the UK, but really top guys too.

    Just to add - I have been having carb troubles as per my other posts. This afternoon I wheeled the bike into my neighbour-buddy's garage, removed side panels, seat and tank then the carb, opened it up, removed the jets, tapped out my first ever emulsion tube and started removing all the massive amounts of gunk from within, took the carb and bits to Rea where they are now being ultrasonic cleaned ready for reassembly etc. tomorrow.

    My back went out as I got to the garage, and it was tough wheeling the bike up the gentle slope into the garage, especially since it weighs twice what I currently do (seriously 2x plus 10lb -
    bike wet weight 262.4 lbs. me without my rags at 126lb!), but the toughest part was slaying the demons making me feel I couldn't do it at all - the parts all came off in the fashion they looked like they should, and it was a smooth, unrushed process lasting a couple of hours in total, and I only slightly skinned one knuckle heheheh.

    So you see, my beliefs are locked in a different universe than the actual reality and they hold me over there with them, until I manage to stand and leap the gap and get it done, and for the first time in my life since I was a tot, it sometimes takes a little unnecessary-seeming 'hand-holding' to get me started. Previously, I was ferociously independent and just did almost everything myself flying blind.

    Cheers again Callum!

    🙂

    P.s. - are you a UK native too?

  • Does the DTR fuel tank 'breath' through the fuel cap?..
    F FloWolF

    @SpookDog

    I've had blocked tank breathers before, and seen plenty correctly diagnosed by others and the vacuum stopping the fuel delivery symptom is plenty real.

    I've had the cap off and in bits now so I know there's nothing wrong with that, just wanted to check I hadn't missed something like a seperate breather pipe elsewhere.

    Next job I'll drain the tank and check the tank filter, then work naturally onwards from there, then.

    Cheers bud!

  • 1992 DT125R, a bit slow to warm up, did I cause any problems on my ride?...
    F FloWolF

    @HOTSHOT-III

    Thanks.

    Well that's not on the cards at the moment, I spent all my funds buying the bike and getting it on the road heheheh.

    I'll likely see if I can borrow my buddy's garage, prop it up in there and do the full tank and plastic off job to get it off then I can clean it and refit more at my leisure. Will also give me chance to drain the tank and check the tap filter, but to be honest 32 years old or not, this hasn't been used much and appears well looked after so that's probably all quite clean.

    I used to love doing shit like this, I'd dive right into an engine blind/no books or internet and tear it down and rebuild with basic tools, but I'm fooked now, body rather beat and enthusiasm almost dead and buried, heheh.

    Cheers again!

  • DT125R Lighting! (1992 model)
    F FloWolF

    @SpookDog The 'Upgrade' was to fit a Lucas 100/80 watt, in place of the original 45/40 watt.

    However after I ordered mine, at a cost of 13 quid plus, I saw some xenon/extra-white ones at 100/90 watt and dirt cheap at 6 quid a pair, so I got those too. They arrived first, so it's actually a xenon 100/90 in there now.

    To be fair the reflector seems just fine on this, and since there's enough power for it, the bulb swap/upgrade is the simplest 'fix'.

    And NO! The bike IS an electric start model, but it still runs a separate AC coil for the lighting! No revs, no glow. I don't know why they did it this way, unless it was to protect the battery charge for the YPVS? Fook Nose!

    Cheers !

  • DT125R Lighting! (1992 model)
    F FloWolF

    Just took delivery of mine last week, I utterly love it!

    I didn't much like the ride I took out on it over the country road at night to visit my brother, though - it was like riding holding out a candle in front of me and I fairly crapped myself a couple of times as oncoming headlights ate up every detail from in front of me.

    Anyway after taking some advice, I changed the headlight bulb for a significantly brighter one, as per the upgrade discussed elsewhere here some time ago. Not been out on it at night again yet, but it certainly looks a whole world better even in the daylight.

    So now I am wondering, is there a similar upgrade/brighter bulb available for the side/parking lights, and also the instruments illumination without having to do the LED thing? They look WOEFULLY dim as they are.

    Cheers me dears!

  • PV cables swap over at some point?..
    F FloWolF

    Cheers buddy, I'd searched and just turned up gibberish that confused me even more, but once I ignored all the threads claiming the pulley rotates clockwise for PV opening, and set the cables back as they were supposed to be (1-2, 2-1) it all made sense again - it must turn anticlockwise viewed from the LHS to open it couldn't work the other way! Anyhow, it's all up and running and I've fully re-dressed her and given her a wipe over and a run up and down the road. All seems well enough but it feels like the PV opened more and earlier before I tore it down and serviced it, I think it had been adjusted from the normal peg-in-hole alignment perhaps, but it's al good enough for now and if I want to tune it a bit differently for preference at least I know what I'm doing now! Time to ride it some more whilst I think about sorting my carb tune properly down the line. 🙂 Cheers Calum!
