Sounds excellent, not a huge fan of revving of 10,000 anyways I love the sound of some midrange power, I've currently got a DEP silencer and de-restricted pipe, How would you go about upgrading the Ignition system?

I highly recommend the Zeeltronic ignition systems. I own 4 of them. That was the single biggest improvement on my Yamaha IMO.

Yeah, I've grown to like the Athena I must admit. If you go back 10 years, you'll find posts of me not loving it so much. The reason is, my friends all had Aprilia RS125s and they just run rings around the DTRs. The fact is, I wanted something like a YZ or Aprilia in terms of performance.

I've now grown to realise that the DTR was never going to be on par with those bikes, no matter how much I spend. So now it's just about appreciating the DTR for what it is. The Athena is more akin to my type of riding, when I'm on my DTR.

When I'm on my RS, it's all about revving the nuts off of it 😛

@StanKn I'm not sure about that, I've just been around DTRs for a long time. Probably done every modification under the sun and back again. So I know a little more than average about them. True masters are people like @oldman @scrimsmustang @HOTSHOT-III to name a few.

Yes it worth's the money ported or stock will give you mid range and the ability to cruise at nice speeds around 5K rpm depending the gearing,if you go the tuning way depending the depth of tuning, you can still have mid range like above but scream at about 13K rpm.
Zeeltronic is excellent as @Calum said.
You can "play" nice with Yamaha's CDI from other models if you want or some unrestricted.
@Calum has done extensive mods the other members mentioned from him have their respected history also,I will add @SpookDog and @Louis-DT-WR.

I need my tools and a pile of junk.....

Oh meant to ask this too, do I need to do many changes to the jetting if I get the 170cc kit or do the stock jets work fine?
                Thanks again

You'll want to adjust the jetting to suit.

To get the most out of the Athena you'll want a bigger carburettor. I run the VHSA out of the TZR 4DL Belgarda.

                    @StanKn

                    Stock work fine with me.

I got a nice improvement in mid and (especially) low rev range torque. I never get tired of cruising along at just over 5K~RPM doing 60mph nice and lazily…

I’m sure a bigger carb would be a boon, but myself I hardly ever go over half~3/4 throttle, so it’d be wasted on me 😜
I kinda think if you love WOT revving the nuts off of it, it’d be better sticking with the 3MB barrel…

My mate used to ride his Athena everywhere pinned.

                      Was very reliable.
