Why has someone told you to upgrade your ignition.

    Can you elaborate please?

            Ignition is a vague term.

It ranges from vehicle to vehicle. But on the DT, the ignition system comprises of:

Fly Wheel, Stator, Pick Up, Magneto, Coil, HT Lead, Spark Plug & CDI. Probably something else, but that's about the jist.

So asking, Ignition Upgrade, is really vague. You need to be more specific.

Fitting reeds has nothing to do with the ignition, so not sure why that's been suggested.

Clearly the person doesn't know what they're on about, or trying to pull a fast one...

@darty Ha it was you lol. Cmon Darty, ignition, you're more technical than that lol.

Ignition is a vague term. You meant CDI. Which is only part of the ignition.

On my DT I replaced the lot with items that had "Racing" in the description. Because if it doesn't say that then it's clearly not better right!

It comes down to what you want to do with your bike.

If you're using it daily, then leave it stock. If it's a weekend toy and you want to start tuning it up, bang for buck I'd say swapping out the CDI for an aftermarket one is probably one of the most noticeable things you can do. An exhaust system comes close second.

@calum Guess we are all morons then.

Agreed though, it is not worth spending the money if you do not know how to use it.

But I use my DT daily, it runs as good as I want it to. That is benefit of a Tunable 'Capacitor Discharge Ignition'

                    Ignition.

@darty My DT would have been sound as a daily. In fact, it was sound daily. It was the rear sprocket carrier that failed lol. Haven't ridden it since then.

@ryanjimccfc Me and Darty have differing opinions.

I run Zeeltronic Ignition system. I will be getting another Zeeltronic for my RS iminently.

@Darty Would recommend the Ignitech Ignition system, which I believe is £100 cheaper.

Either one you chose should be a lovely upgrade, and really comes into its own when you start adding the other mods.

The Zeeltronic system will come with 5 different maps to try out.

@ryanjimccfc it’s my understanding that a base map will work but if you want to get your money’s worth you should really tune the map to your bike and needs but that’s just my understanding

Nothing will come close to a rolling road tune-up session, as that will get the best out of all of your mods and upgrades in one go. If you want the best performance it's money well spent. 😉

@ninja On a car, yes, but on a Carb Bike, ey? The base maps will give a noticeable increase in power throughout the rev range. After that, it's just subtle changes that will only register on a dyno.

Merely because the CDI only controls the ignition at one point in time. Unlike an ECU which will consider, temperature, load, stress, oil pressure. Then controls fueling as well as ignition. Much more precisely and therefore far more gains.

Get an ignition, will sweeten the whole bike. Then uprate the fueling, And you'll be laughing.,
