Athina 170cc bore kit recommendations
-
hi, my names Harvey and am thinking of buying a DT/R/RE/X to tune to 170 with an athina kit but am unable to find the recommended carb/jetting, downpipe, cdi and sprocket ratios to run with the kit. I do have previous experience with tuning bikes as I have restored and tuned a Yamaha DT50MX.
Any help would be greatly appreciated- Thanks, Harvey

@harveymg Hi Harvey,
Firstly, I've never had a 170kit. But have ridden one. I would recommend looking at tuning a 3MB or 4FU barrel and cylinder head rather than spending £450 on the Athena kit.
I had a tuned TZR 134cc engine with Mikuni TM32 and Ignitech ignition upgrade, and it would pull hard to 85mph in 5th gear, all around the same cost as an Athena Kit alone.
The port timings on the 170 kit are seriously underwhelming but can be modified properly though,
My advice, have a gander at tuning the 125. It was a blast, and relatively inexpensive.

I have had plenty of experience with the Athena 170. Bad quality casting and bad overall performance. There was even a hole in my cylinder which leaked coolant. Athena wouldn't bother. Don't buy if you are looking for performance.

I'm actually building a fully tuned engine based on the athena 170 cylinder, cylinder must be ported(in my case i've fully done Booster Exhaust ports and intake work aswell as engine case work., and you must be running atleast a 53mm stroker crankshaft to be able to get something out of this kit(i actually have a fully built cnc one for sale right now). You should also add a programable cdi to be able.
If you need any kind of tuning work hit me up on message for a quote for exactly what you want to do with it.
Some of the guys are kinda correct here, if you don't want to spend alot of money, just get yourself a 4FU cylinder ported, your cylinder head machined to get the correct squish and combustion area, a decent carburator.A good ported 175cc(yes because for it to run correctly you must atleast use a 53mm stroker crank which increases it to 175cc) will make more power and more torque than a good ported original cylinder.

@DanRacing thanks for the advice I'm probably going to end up doing that as I don't have a very big budget and wouldn't like to to a lot of work like that. I will look into the 4FU cylinder. Where would be a place i could get one of them?

I might be able to get one here in portugal and port for you then ship it there to the UK. They are common here in Portugal, the 3MB ones are cheaper but they have a iron bore instead of nikasil

@Irongamer727 that's really bad! im going to take everyone else advice and get a 4FU or 3MB cylinder instead with a aftermarket pipe and carb
