Oil Questions
-
@irongamer727 As long as you stick with the bigger well-known brands you can't really mess it up. As for types of oil I use yamaha 10w-40 4t for my gearbox and motul 100% synthetic 2-stroke oil for the engine for all my 2 strokes. If I don't have motul, I just go with castrol.
@minia I run Castrol Power 1 2T Racing in all my machines. Cheap and hopefully good.

Hello everybody, now I'm look at getting a Dt125 as my first bike, now I have a few questions about the oil and coolant. Gearbox oil what oil would I need how much and how often would I need to change it. Engine oil what oil would I need how much and how often do I need to top it up, and coolant is it just any coolant for a car etc how much and how often would I need to top it up. Sorry the seemingly silly questions I just want to to know the rough cost of running the bike before I get one many thanks.
@yamahaman5000 I always found that Silkolene products were very high quality and performed very well indeed.
-
My castrol oil cost roughly £10 for 1l. I found that silkolene for a whopping £22!!
You guys think there is a difference in quality between them?

@irongamer727 You can get Silkolene comp 2 for £15 a litre, which yes is more expensive, but as with everything in life - quality does not come cheap. Some people will say that oil is oil, but all the top race teams will most definitely not be using Castrol oil for-sure.
-
@ninja Alright thanks. Transmisson oil then?
What do you run? -

What do you run?@irongamer727 Silkolene 75W-90, is what I have just put in my Starlet. Think it was around £75 for 4 litres.

@calum and your DT and RS?
-
@calum and your DT and RS?
@irongamer727 Castrol GTX Semi Synthetic lol.
I'll probably go with Silkolene for the RS, but the DT only ever got Castrol. I was on a budget at the time. And the DT doesn't make any power, plus engines were ten a penny.

Yeah I can't comment. Great on my starlet but as said only ran semj synthetic castrol on the dt
@calum well I'm after good quality stuff. It's got the right classifications.

@irongamer727 Yes, but I have had good oils mess with my clutch before. Castrol magnetec cause the clutch to slip uncontrollably

@calum but mate it doesn't have the right classifications. Can't say I'm surprised really.

@irongamer727 Ey? What doesn't Magnetec? Does it say don't use with cork clutch plates lol

@irongamer727 your being wayyy too picky with your oil just grab some for wet clutches at a good price I’ve used the cheapest oil money can buy in my 4 stroke and I liked the stuff the best cheap oil I used was Tesco’s own brand it was genuinely good oil
-
@calum yeah but there’s really not much into it especially for a 2 stroke I’m just saying some of the best oil I’ve had was Tesco’s and that wasn’t dirt cheap but was still an ok price
@declan Good oil can and will prolong the life of the engine. That's my only concern.
Cheap oil, no thanks. -

Cheap oil, no thanks.@irongamer727 like your ever going to tell, but if you want the best of the best they buy the most expensive oil you can find then I guess there’s no room for doubt
-
Its almost impossible to wear out the transmission on our bikes, so its fine as long as it meets the specifications.
I cant remeber the interval for changing the oil, but its rediciously high. Most will change it way before, so the oil have an easy life. Just about any oil on the marked will exceed the specifikations on our bikes, which were basically designed in the 80's.So yeah, dont overthink it.
