Not too sure on the specifics. But I imagine it would either be just about salvageable if the pits weren't too big, OR a specialist would have to actually build it up by adding ally back into it. Either way keep looking around and a cheaper option might pop up soon.

@MIGHTYMAN Thanks. I agree - was just being hopeful someone would tell me it'll be fine 😉

You would need work done to that one... The pits in the centre are where loose metal has been smashed against it.

That OR engine detonated. Detonation is engine killer.

Absolute waste of money buying that head it's fucked. You would have to have it worked, in which case you might as well get the 3BN head worked

@AndyYam is the 4DL as good as the 3MB? I've just put on my third head gasket now (Athena gasket) and still have a leak so I'm guessing my 3bn is warped anyway 😞

@Calum thanks Calum, think I will go for that if you reckon its a good buy? I really can't find much info on the web about putting a 4dl head on a 3mb00 DTR barrel? I assume it will be an improvement over the 3bn - especially if minesl is warped!

Use a genuine Yamaha gasket when you put your new head on, a lot more money but it'll be worth it

The 4dl head sits on a 3mb barrel. Graham Bell says the head is where the majority of the power is made. Get that right and you can't go far wrong.

I have done many heads before and haven't had any problems with Athena. There is a tutorial on qhat you should do to prep the head and barrel using a sheet of glass and various grades of wet and dry paper. Do what I say in that turorial and it will seal.

I think i have 1-2 4DL heads sitting around in the garage. I'm away for a week in Wales as of monday. If i have time before then ill get photos up in the for sale section. If not it'll be when i get back.

What did that one on ebay go for? as a guide for price.

Will a 1989 3MB head fit the 3MB barrel of my 2000 dt?
