@tdr125greg Why can't you have a bearing cup made?
-
I could I guess but that would mean extending the aprilia's steering stem as it's very identical in length to my standard steerer length???
-
@tdr125greg Identical length ey?
Just go onto Simply bearings and buy thr right size bearings.
Mate might have just stumbled on the easiest USD conversion!
-
I put alot of research into finding a suitable front end as there was alot of options.
Firstly I was going to use yz forks as the bottom half of the stem was 30mm in diameter but soon realised thanks to you guys I would need a cup made up, that itself wouldn't be a major issue but then the process of having to properly shorten them (deltaboxframe angles) and then progressive springs and revalving.....To me that seemed like a right ole Ballache and so started looking at factory sm 125's that came with Usds following the format of having a 17mm wheel spindle, 3.0/3.5 front wheel width and stem diameter length in relative to my standard OEM steerer. This lead to me riejue and aprilia forks then luckily enough a set of aprilia Marzocchi's came up on fleabay and I just couldn't say no to them for a measley 55GBP posted!!!
The aprilia MX standard used 25/52 top and bottom
My tdr takes 25/43 top and a 30/55 bottom
@Calum what's your thoughts on a 25/43 top and 25/52 bottom with maybe a sleeve welded into the bottom of the frames headstock to seat it all tightly??.. Or..... A 28/55 on bottom with maybe one of these.
-
@tdr125greg could you please explain me what exactly did you meant by ...."Firstly I was going to use yz forks as the bottom half of the stem was 30mm in diameter but soon realised thanks to you guys I would need a cup made up, that itself wouldn't be a major issue but then the process of having to properly shorten them (deltaboxframe angles) and then progressive springs and revalving..... " ??
Im going for the yz forks and Im bit confused
-
@Zrako The yz steering stem is longer than the stem on my chosen forks therefore I do not need/have the space to consider the upper bearing cup.
My tdr frame does differe to the frame Of the Dt.
Your best bet for information regarding the bearing cup method can be found on the forum thanks to @Calum
That's your Bible near when it comes to a yz fork swap on a Dt even @gareth_iowc references Calum's method for his project
-
@tdr125greg yeah I've read it couple of times thats why I was confused . Thanks mate
-
@Zrako calum's method works great. i've got some close up pictures so you can see how it works
https://dt125r.co.uk/topic/595/project-i-can-t-leave-things-alone
i used a stock dtr lower bearing in the frame with the yz forks and the stock yz top bearing sat in the new bearing cup

OMG IS THAT A ROLLING CHASSIS BRO???
Not quite!!!!but it does give an idea to how she will sit, I'm so happy with how things are planning out so far on this project for now though
I'm still looking for a tidy wr200 rear swinger and a nice piggy back gas shock (which one I'm still undecided on).Enjoy

@tdr125greg Sure looks sweet there bud, I love the polished ali look myself and would keep it all that way! Not sure if you said it before but are you going for the SM look or not? That bike with high mudguards would look unique and much like a CRF me thinks.

@CYBER-NINJA yeah man Polisport SM line fender and a front mask headlight. as much as would like to have my frame all polished and dam bro iv thought so many times about polishing it i always come back to how schweeet and how much less maintenance it would be to have the chassis powder coated in a graphite/slate grey
-
@tdr125greg Too true, you can protect polished stuff with ACF50, which does a cracking job of protecting it for-sure;

But hey I hear what your saying with the powder coating and at least your sticking with the silverish theme. I'm sure she will look sweet once your done and be unique as I said before.
-
@CYBER-NINJA as regards to polished goodies though i do have a few bits to go on i intend to have completely polished engine cases and so i will definitely need to look into a product for protection cheers buddy it means a lot.
-
@tdr125greg Which colour are you going for with the tank and fenders? Are you gonna keep the wheels black too???
-
@CYBER-NINJA yeah man wheels will stay black for sure . and now you have mentioned HONDA CR thoughts of a CR tank and rad aare Overloading my mind lol im guessing the only issues would be mounting points???...
and as far as panels go they will be a shade of blue but as of yet iv still not choosen THE ONE that stands out for me .....
-
@gareth_iowc awesome mate , defo will do the cup. What material did you used?
Btw what you planning to do with the other yz engine? -
@Zrako the guy made it out of alloy
The 1lx is up for sale
