Id go a fair bit bigger idle jet than a 25, im running a 27.5 pilot on 125 bore with snorkel removed here in sunny scotland, id imagine the 170 kit would require a fair bit bigger pilot especially in your climate, maybe a 30?

I'm now contacting Adrenalin (the company I bought the kit from) and I'm asking for a refund.

The issue is that the casting is shite, there is a microscopic hole on the cylinder that leaks coolant, and that the powervalve housing is too big so the bush cannot seal properly.

Exhaust gases and oil pours out if the pv, bruh.
I have more or less demanded a refund, but I don't think they will give me that until Athena in Italy have examined it..

In theory I won't have the Dt running for over a month, unless I immediately mount another cylinder I had from a spare engine..

That means all my jets have been bought in vain and all that, great.

The lesson here is: Do not buy the stupid Athena big bore kit. Even if you don't get a really bad one the power gains are barely notable.
To really benefit from it a lot more have to be done.

          Sometimes life isn't easy..

@irongamer727 I'm sorry to hear that bud, been there, done that, got the T-Shirt.

To be fair, I didn't have half of the issues you have and at the time (being 17) I thought the gains were decent.

But having been on an Aprilia, and for you the Honda, you begin to realise that the Athena kit is still worse than a decent engine. The DT is a cracking bike for everyday use, but I wouldn't bother with much else. Zeeltronic gave the biggest improvement. Bigger carb, V-Force reed block is tempting and exhaust. That'll give your DT a really nice improvement in power, without compromising reliability. And then enjoy the 20 or so brake it gives you.

@irongamer727 I've had casting issues with polini and malossi too. Never good fun. Usually they still need case matching and porting work. Not too bad when you can get new, performance crank cases for like a hundred quid on the little peds. Horrible if you enjoy a bike other than a moped basically. Incidentally just ordered an Athena kit to take a good look myself.

              Current bikes:

1988 Vespa Bravo (100 Simonini side intake RV)
              1989 Honda ZB50 (125 Takegawa dry clutch)
              1983 RD350 YPVS 31k (TZ500 Front end and wheels)
              1991 DT125R (French electric + kick standard)

                What would you do?

Take a full refund and buy a forged piston to the original Cylinder and mount that or take another Athena cylinder?

The carb is already set up for the Athena but it's not much work to set it back to stock.

Could the bike be worth more with the Athena?

@irongamer727 I don't think so, if it were me in the market for a bike I'd rather buy stock or close to it and do the work myself.

Me, I would put back to stock and live with that, at least you know where you are with that. If you get another barrel could be more problems and no guarantee jetting would remain the same.
                    But that's me.

Would rather a standard bore than a 170 if I'm honest, get it ported and I'm doubting itd be far off the Athena. Or if you're feeling the bigger cc kits splash out for a BARacing 200kit and really feel the power 😍

@bananper Not peak, but more power through the midrange. I want to say torque, but I always get thumbed down for saying that.

@bananper Without a Dyno Graph it's hard to tell. But due to the port timings being way out, once you start climbing through the revs, the opportunity for the power to be made starts diminishing.

Hence why at low RPM's you have the extra CC's to help deliver more low down grunt, but the power tapers off and the gap between a stock barrel and Athena barrel starts to thin out. You definitely lose overrev with the big bore, so the stock barrel will continue to rev out further, allow you to zap out a few extra ponies with the help of porting.

Two strokes in general don't love over square engines, the fact that the big bore kit widens the bore whilst maintaining the stroke exacerbates this. A longer stroke is ideal for this kit. There is the potential then, for the longer stroke to correct the port timings, out by 3mm I'm led to believe, to actually correct the issues with the barrel.

But by the time you've done all that, you may as well have just thrown a 3XP0 cylinder and crank and be done with it.

I haven't the expertise or experience to really comment on how any of this translates. But it's just what I've read from various sites.
