  • Easy to understand tm28 carb fixes and how they work
    S scrimsmustang

    Bike won't start

OK, more than likely the starter jets are blocked both the one in the float bowl and the one on the carb body. Squirt them with carb cleaner and poke them out with wire and blow out with compressed air.

Blogging with airbox snorkel removed, your getting to much air through the pilot jet passage, go up on your pilot to even it out with a bit more fuel from tickover to quarter throttle.

Fowling plugs, check your needle clip position, lift the clip to lean it out. Put it to standard clip if it's been moved and take it from there. It's not usually caused by the main. Think about it your normally riding in the mid range.

Only ticking over on the choke, dying without the choke, pilot passage partially blocked so needs the rich choke circuit to run.

You starter jets are both blocked by the sounds of it, the one on the carb body and the one in the float bowl. Common problem with none starting tm28,s

Very old post but should help people who think these carbs are a nightmare when they have a starting problem with them.

@Stevie-Wonder Pretty sure he documented it all on this website...

Ye I know @Calum I’ve re-reading it but all the photos are now gone 😞

@Challenger I’ve got a v force blaster 200 Reed cage that should help right ?

And thanks @scrimsmustang! If I’d been known it was simple earlier I think I’d have already done it 😂

Excusing the powervalve blade itself do you need the WR’s Servo motor, pulleys and housing etc

And I presume you need either a 200cdi or a Zeely/Ignitech programmable ignition too

No you can use a 125 servo and a 125 CDI with no problems at all

Is there anyone here who could or knows someone that’d one day bore it may cases to accept WR200 3xp top end and crank? And what they’d charge for it?

It’s been something I’ve been curious about ever since seeing @Louis-DT-WR build his engine

It's nothing cases just need a couple of mm taking off to accept the 200 crankshaft. Any small local engineering shop will do it for around 30 quid. Top end just drops straight on

Get hold of a genuine 3nc or 3py model code early dtr same bike, both were made by mbk in france for sale in france and Italy. Ive got a mint 91 3nc mine kicks in at 6500 then has a second hit at 10000 and bounces off 12000 all day. Flies off the clock with ease, sounds like a yz even with the standard pipe. They come up on ebay now and again, snap one up if you find one. Im keeping mine its the quickest bone stock dtr ive ever riden, also comes with decent paiolli suspension front and rear standard. I had never really rode this dtr so i rode to a small local bike show 2 Friday nights ago last one of the summer, it was then after she had warmed up i discovered this thing turn into a proper flying screamer lol.

Well almost another year has past and i have finally got this thing on its wheels, been waiting for the really hard to find stuff like a mint un butchered 88 wiring loom like rocking horse poo they are as the 88 DTR uses a separate full power YPVS controller from a TZR, its the only DTR model that does. Genuine Yamaha cable ties mint original black hub wheels with mint original spokes. The hardest of all the bits to find believe it or not the lower fork gaiter clamps that are also 88 model only, Yamaha done away with them 89 onward. Well should be ready for an mot by the end of the week hopefully. Will stick some pics up then as now its just a rolling chassis covered in grubby oily fingerprints.

No not applied as vat registered, hmrc dont even class eu bikes as imports as no duty is payable on them and not once have they asked for a foreign logbook copy or receipt for any eu bike I have registered . None eu bikes hmrc do want a copy of the foreign logbook and purchase receipt so they can calculate the duty, every none eu bike they have asked for them.

  • Importing from France etc.
    S scrimsmustang

Thinking of importing a bike from europe ? cons, im sure you have all looked on leboncoin etc and thought thats cheap sometimes. Seems like every man and his dog are at it these days. To be honest unless you bring atleast 7 per trip back and split the cost between the 7 bikes its not worth going.

Downfall number 1, the French ! They are so hard to deal with its unbelievable more so if you dont speak French, try messaging a few bikes on leboncoin and see how many replies you get. Better still try ringing and see how many just put the phone down on you. Seriously they think its a scam, how many people from France contact you wanting to buy your bike from another country ? Think about it.

Downfall number 2, France is huge and very rural, all the nice stuff is down south were the climate is nice. That means lots of fuel and 90% of French motorways have tolls. The main Alpine route is extortionate, you need hotels because it normally takes a while because of the distances. Bikes from the north are no better than uk bikes.

Inprespective, to go to the south of France in a van to collect just one nice French bike costs around 350 to 380 Eurotunnel train, 3 full tanks of fuel say no more, French motorway tolls . 3 hotels plus your little expenses food etc. It soon becomes very expensive and not such a bargain.

If you want to try get a friend in France and one in Switzerland to hand pick the best low mileage low owner bikes and make the arrangements for you then go for 7 no less. Keep some for yourself and your mates then sell the rest to cover your expenses, you might make a little not much. Them days are gone now, but if your an enthusiast your still ok but hurry up all nice stuff is getting more expensive and harder to find.

You will need a dating certificate to register the bike once it is built up and mot,d if you dont have the foreign logbook, then you will need to check to see if its on the nova system. If its not you will need to put it on the system so dvla can check the nova refrence number. Yamaha uk will charge you 50 quid for a dating certificate, i can get them for 30 if you go this route. To get the dating certificate you need to provide 4 clear pictures left and right side of the bike, frame number and engine number. These pictures also need to go with the dating certificate to dvla.

So what you need to register an import with no foreign documents is as follows.

    V55/5
    Mot
    Nova sorting
    Dating certificate
    4 pictures
