@calum said in 1988 rebuild update:

@nottsbiker It's not a silencer. It's Yamaha Energy Intake System and is used to as a resonance boost bottle.

I've explained it before, but probably poorly. Definitely research it.

I know what the YEIS does but I'm unsure if the second 'bottle' is a boost bottle and always assumed it was a modification by Yamaha to the older engine to either quieten it down more or improve emissions.

@nottsbiker As @AndyYam used to say, the competition WR had those same bottles. They wouldn't restrict a competition bike.

Split was not there when reassembled, ran fine at the time, been a few weeks since then waiting for wheels to be done, just old rubber I guess, could have gone anytime

Just had to Google that to check and you are correct 😉

Still can't see a second bottle though. Only the normal bottle?

Yes I thought that might be the case due to having the dellorto rather than the mikuni carb.

If i could find a 200R engine I'd use the associated carb which I reckon is the same 28mm mikuni as the DTR

@calum Not 100%, Yamaha restriced the intake volume on the WR200 for ridabilty,

It was never intended for competition, it's a trail bike. Hence their effort to smooth out intake pulses at low RPM with YIES.

Ordered the new one but will repair old one when I get it off, what glue did you use and how is it holding up?

Mine was smothered in silicone. Doubt you'll get a glue that remains flexible enough, although a contact adhesive like carpet glue might work.

@oldman just used some cheap super glue from the local paper shop its friendly to rubber wood etc and as far as I know it worked a treat

I'd try super glue as well

Not how I'd do it. Replace the item, it's cheap enough new from Yamaha.

Ultimately if that part starts to weep, you're going to run your bike lean, and before you know it, you'll burn a hole through your piston, as well as your wallet.

And people wonder why DT's can be in right dog states.

No notification of delivery yet, maybe tomorrow, would only use old one as emergency spare if I was satisfied it was serviceable. Lasted a fair few years so new one will last a while, will probably replace the 89 as well when I get that far, peace of mind and no disappointment

@oldman did they have to order it? If so I've had it a few times now where they have refunded and sent me a email to say the part had been discontinued,

I'm worried that some of the perishable items like these will run out. Hopefully if there is enough demand Yamaha or a 3rd party will step in and do a production run.

Ordered from csml, haven't had a failed delivery yet, shows in stock, will let you know when I receive delivery notification.

At a loose end this eve so decided to start stripping down white 89 bike, all went well and overall in better condition at the start from the 88. Couple of minor defects found, looks like the rear caliper was resprayed with the pads in place, fair bit of overspray on other items. Draining oil overnight and continue tomorrow, will start new thread for this one.0_1506115790935_20170922_222208.jpg
