Athena 170

If using a TM28 carb then need a 300 main jet with a 27.5 idle jet. Main jets go up to 430. Put clip in the bottom groove on needle.

@2stroketerry I'm running 310 now and it's certainly not optimal. Idle is 35 now, definitely too big.
-
In reality, what would cause the bike not to start on the first or second spin on the starter. Is it just down to the pilot jet and fuel/Air mix?
Obviously a good battery and fresh electric components will make things easier but I got that covered.I've read in the Haynes that there is supposed to be a starter jet in the later carbs? Much of what that books says makes no sense...

I run the autolube on my dt125r bottom end with wr200 top end. I just adjusted it to suit the larger capacity. I've run it for years. Autolube is brilliant
-
@louis-james hows that thing to start?
-
First kick 99% of the time
-
@louis-james you run the 28mm carb? The flat one?
-
I used to, I had the tmx30 for a while, now a tm34ss
-
@louis-james you ran the 28 with the wr200?
-
No, I had the 30 when it was still a 125. Lid was cut off the air box the the 28mm btw
-
@louis-james alright
-
@irongamer727 recommend getting a decent reed block on there. Many can be modified to fit
-
@louis-james naah at the moment I simply want her to run good, start easy and stay that way.
-
As I suspected my pilot jet to be too big (size 35) I ordered a smaller 25. But the bike literally ran like shit and the idle was very uncontrolled and the bike just sounded wrong!
Is the next step to order a larger?
I can without a drop in rpm turn the airscrew all the way in, no change really. That must be an indicator that it's to small right?
-
Yeb sounds like you need to up the idlejet in size.
-
@Calum agree?

I'm now contacting Adrenalin (the company I bought the kit from) and I'm asking for a refund.
The issue is that the casting is shite, there is a microscopic hole on the cylinder that leaks coolant, and that the powervalve housing is too big so the bush cannot seal properly.
Exhaust gases and oil pours out if the pv, bruh.
I have more or less demanded a refund, but I don't think they will give me that until Athena in Italy have examined it..In theory I won't have the Dt running for over a month, unless I immediately mount another cylinder I had from a spare engine..
That means all my jets have been bought in vain and all that, great.
The lesson here is: Do not buy the stupid Athena big bore kit. Even if you don't get a really bad one the power gains are barely notable.
To really benefit from it a lot more have to be done.Sometimes life isn't easy..

@irongamer727 I'm sorry to hear that bud, been there, done that, got the T-Shirt.
To be fair, I didn't have half of the issues you have and at the time (being 17) I thought the gains were decent.
But having been on an Aprilia, and for you the Honda, you begin to realise that the Athena kit is still worse than a decent engine. The DT is a cracking bike for everyday use, but I wouldn't bother with much else. Zeeltronic gave the biggest improvement. Bigger carb, V-Force reed block is tempting and exhaust. That'll give your DT a really nice improvement in power, without compromising reliability. And then enjoy the 20 or so brake it gives you.
