    Apart from a lot of shame and embarrassment?

    I had to call my (lovely!) Siss to bring out some petrol cans, empty the tank on the side of the road, nip to the garage and refill the tank. Started second kick.
    The massive plumes of white smoke cleared up in less that a klick! 🙂

    It was a place I’d never been to before and all the hoses were black (BP?) I saw the ‘supreme’ and fuxed up!

    But it was my fault, not the bike. If anything it was a trooper for getting me 2 miles down the (unwalkable because of flyovers) dual carriageway before ‘puffing’ out!
    I use my mirrors more now! 😜 💨💨💨

    Kinda pisses you off when your recently ‘rebored’ piston used to rattle back and forwards in the barrel, doesn’t it?! I had the same experience buying a REBORED barrel & piston.
    I’m very particular about who does my rebores now…

    Taking the powervalve apart is pretty easy, you’d be surprised how gummed up it can get too. Always worth checking that out

    Once you start getting crap in the carb, it can only come through the tank. I can’t run my bike for any length of time without an inline filter. Getting a decent quality small one is the problem…

    Classic, well they say nothing last forever.

    I'd change it at the recommend service interval, if nothing else, restores lost power.

    Did you see my Cagiva Raptor. Nothing wrong with that engine on the face of it. Started on the button and ran really well. Last year I decided to do the service interval.

    Turned out the piston had a hairline crack in on top of the piston crown and down the gudgeon locator...ticking time bomb.

    I had a barrel replated, new piston/rings and the bike was utterly night and day in terms of performance. The thing absolutely flew.

    Then a few weeks later it was really struggling to run. I went on an overseas trip and came back when the temperature had drops some, then the engine just died.

    I haven't stripped it enough to figure it out yet, but at 30 PSI, prognosis is not good. I whipped the cylinder head off and the piston/bore are in good shape. My guess is the crankshaft seals have given up. The restored new power was just too much for them and they've let go.

    The cylinder sucks in air at intervals, leading to a pulsation in the inlet airflow. That bottle is a buffer that smooths out the pulsations.

    The piston goes up, sucking in air through the carburetor which is (and should be) the main restriction in the intake. This causes a low pressure on the engine side of the carburetor, including that bottle.

    When the piston goes down and closes the intake port, there would be a rather sudden pulse where air rush in through the carburetor and meets a dead end. Pressure rises, gas stops throughout the manifold, including the carburetor. Then when the port opens and the piston sucks in gas again, it would have to accelerate the gas mass from zero.

    With the bottle, the volume of that closed-off manifold is artificially increased, so it takes longer for the gas to fill the cavity and come to a stop. Hence it keeps moving, supposedly until the port opens again and the piston suck in gas again.

    The effect should be that there is a more constant flow of air through the carburetor, which likely improves the atomization or decrease condensation or whatever.

    4-stroke engines usually tune the intake manifold runner lengths such that the air pulsations should cause the "pillar of gas" that comes at the intake valve at high speed should "ram" through it when it opens. While the mass of the air is small and it is very elastic, the velocities are substantial so it counts. I wager this is sort of the same thing.

    In 4-stroke engines it is also not uncommon that the intake runner lengths vary with engine speed. I know my car has a valve that opens and shorten the length above some rpms. My Honda Fireblade also had something like it in the airbox.

    Well that's not on the cards at the moment, I spent all my funds buying the bike and getting it on the road heheheh.

    I'll likely see if I can borrow my buddy's garage, prop it up in there and do the full tank and plastic off job to get it off then I can clean it and refit more at my leisure. Will also give me chance to drain the tank and check the tap filter, but to be honest 32 years old or not, this hasn't been used much and appears well looked after so that's probably all quite clean.

    I used to love doing shit like this, I'd dive right into an engine blind/no books or internet and tear it down and rebuild with basic tools, but I'm fooked now, body rather beat and enthusiasm almost dead and buried, heheh.

    @Stevie-Wonder They're ace, they'll sell you a GPX TSE250R engine which bolts straight in, and other stuff like a cone-shaped shim which fits on a DTR crankshaft under the flywheel to enable running it in a DTRe bottom end.

    i want to know if those are correct so i can make mine too
    its not a rush project it will take much time but i just want to start slowly somewhere and maybe i can start designing it on my pc
    and as it wont be much pricey why not just start something

    Don't be sorry, I think it looks great too, it's just they aren't my colours and they're way louder than I am.

    However I've ridden the bike and now, and immediately realised I actually couldn't care less what it looks like. 🙂
