Thought it might be similar to the ones fitted to Cagiva Supercity's to guide cool air to the caliper.

TDR-R's have something similar as well so Yamaha seem to think they work, out did backin the 90's

I agree to a point, now I have the history from DVLA colour change recorded in 1991, so only white for 3 years. God knows why it was changed, do have the owners address at the time but how likely is it they still live there? Be good to know though, same owner changed the engine 5 months later. The red is a great colour and as much as I like the white colour scheme the red is a real eye catcher. Maybe I will get the frame on the 89 powdercoated silver when I do it and swap it all over. Once done if I had to sell one it would be the white, no question, even with the worn panels. I think they call it age related patina! History from dvla very comprehensive, good value for a fiver, going to do the same for the 89

Ebay has had its day. They only want big volume sellers not the likes of you and I shifting unwanted spares any more as its too much hassle for them. Don't get me started on the fees either = total rip off

@Calum You can have to big a fuelheight, and the engine will be rich. This is possible even without the carb overflooding. if its really excessive, then the bike will spit fuel out the overflow when its on its sidestand. The same goes the other way, it can very well be lean, without running totally out of fuel. When fuellevel is lower than its supposed to, more air can rush by. As I said, af few milimeters makes a lot of difference.

I had this exact problem when i bought mine used. It was only running witch choke on, so the PO assumed it was very lean, and richened it by altering the fuellevel. What was wrong was that all jets were partially blocked, so the bike almost lived entirely of the choke circuit. It didnt run that well 😀

As to the OP, set everything to stock, so you dont have too amny things fooling you. It could very well be a combination of things. Atleast this way you ran rule out a lof of stuff.
